Leviticus 10 – The Death of Nadab and Abihu, Priestly Sobriety, and the Priests’ Portion

Then Aaron’s sons Nadab and Abihu each took his censer, put fire in it, and laid incense on the fire. Thus they offered before the LORD strange fire, which He had not commanded them.

And fire came out from before the LORD and consumed them, so that they died before the LORD.

Then Moses said to Aaron, “This is what the LORD spoke: ‘Among those who are near to Me I will show Myself holy, and before all the people I will be glorified.’” And Aaron was silent.

Then Moses called Mishael and Elzaphan, the sons of Uzziel, Aaron’s uncle, and said to them, “Come near; carry your brothers away from before the sanctuary, out of the camp.”

So they came and carried them in their tunics out of the camp, as Moses had said.

Then Moses said to Aaron and to Eleazar and Ithamar, Aaron’s sons, “Do not let your hair hang loose, and do not tear your garments, lest you die and wrath come upon all the congregation; but let your brothers, the whole house of Israel, mourn the burning that the LORD has kindled.

And do not go out from the entrance of the Tent of Meeting, lest you die, for the anointing oil of the LORD is upon you.” And they did according to the word of Moses.

Then the LORD spoke to Aaron:

“Do not drink wine or strong drink, you or your sons with you, when you go into the Tent of Meeting, lest you die. It shall be a statute forever throughout your generations.

You are to distinguish between the holy and the common, and between the unclean and the clean,

and you are to teach the people of Israel all the statutes that the LORD has spoken to them by Moses.”

Then Moses spoke to Aaron and to Eleazar and Ithamar, Aaron’s sons who were left: “Take the grain offering that remains from the LORD’s fire offerings, and eat it unleavened beside the altar, for it is most holy.

You shall eat it in a holy place, because it is your portion and your sons’ portion from the LORD’s fire offerings; for so I have been commanded.

14
The breast of the wave offering and the thigh of the contribution you shall eat in a clean place, you and your sons and your daughters with you; for they are given as your portion and your sons’ portion from the sacrifices of the peace offerings of the people of Israel.

15
The thigh of the special offering and the breast of the wave offering they shall bring with the offerings made by fire, the fat portions, to be waved as a wave offering before the LORD. It shall be a statute forever for you and for your children, as the LORD has commanded."

Then Moses diligently sought the goat of the sin offering, but it was found to have been burned up. Therefore he was angry with Eleazar and Ithamar, Aaron’s remaining sons, saying:

"Why have you not eaten the sin offering in the holy place? For it is most holy, and he has given it to you to bear the guilt of the congregation, to make atonement for them before the LORD?

See, its blood was not brought inside the holy place; you should surely have eaten it in the holy place, as I commanded."

Then Aaron said to Moses, "Behold, today they have offered their sin offering and their burnt offering before the LORD; yet such things as these have happened to me. If I had eaten the sin offering today, would it have been accepted by the LORD?"

When Moses heard that, he agreed.

Leviticus 10 is a stern warning about the seriousness of holiness in worshiping the Lord. Two of Aaron’s sons—Nadab and Abihu—died because they offered "strange fire", that is, fire not commanded by the Lord. 3. The Priests Are Forbidden to Drink Wine While on Duty (verses 8–11)

• The Lord instructed Aaron that the priests must not drink wine or strong drink when entering the Tent of Meeting, so that they would not die.
• The priest must distinguish between the holy and the unclean, between the unfit and the fit, and teach the Lord’s law to the people.

4. Instructions Concerning the Offering and Holy Food (verses 12–20)

• Moses rebuked Eleazar and Ithamar because they did not eat the portion of the offering as commanded.

• The priests of today (that is, all believers in Christ) are still called to live in holiness and obedience.
• Alcohol, recklessness, and actions without spiritual discernment can destroy ministry.
