Leviticus 17

Leviticus 17 – Place of Sacrifice and the Prohibition of Eating Blood

1
The LORD spoke to Moses:

2
“Speak to Aaron and to his sons and to all the people of Israel, and say to them: This is the word that the LORD has commanded:

3
Any man of the house of Israel who slaughters an ox or a lamb or a goat in the camp, or outside it,

4
but does not bring it to the entrance of the Tent of Meeting, to offer it as an offering to the LORD before the LORD’s Tabernacle, that man shall be counted guilty of bloodshed, because he has shed blood, and that man shall be cut off from among his people.

5
This is so that the people of Israel may bring their sacrifices, which they have been accustomed to offer in the open field, to the LORD, to the entrance of the Tent of Meeting, and give them to the priest, to offer them to the LORD as a peace offering.

6
The priest shall sprinkle its blood on the altar of the LORD at the entrance of the Tent of Meeting, and burn its fat as a pleasing aroma to the LORD.

7
They shall no longer offer their sacrifices to the goat-demons, for worshiping goat-demons is unfaithfulness. This shall be a lasting statute for them throughout their generations.

8
And you shall say to them: Any man of the house of Israel, or of the stranger who lives among them, who offers a burnt offering or a sacrifice,

9
but does not bring it to the entrance of the Tent of Meeting to be offered to the LORD, that man shall be cut off from among his people.”

10
“Any man of the house of Israel, or of the stranger who lives among them, who eats any blood, I myself will set my face against that person and will cut him off from among his people.

11
For the life of the creature is in its blood, and I have given it to you upon the altar to make atonement for your lives, for it is the blood that makes atonement by means of the life.

12
Therefore I have said to the people of Israel: None of you shall eat blood. Nor shall the stranger who lives among you eat blood.

13
Any man of the people of Israel, or of the stranger who lives among you, who takes in hunting any animal or bird that may be eaten, shall pour out its blood and cover it with earth.

14
For the life of every creature is its blood. Therefore I have said to the people of Israel: You shall not eat the blood of any creature, for the blood is the life of every creature; whoever eats it shall be cut off.”

15
And everyone who eats what dies of itself, or what is torn by wild animals, whether he is a native Israelite or a foreigner, must wash his clothes, bathe himself with water, and he shall be unclean until the evening; then he shall be clean.

16
But if he does not wash his clothes and does not bathe his body, he shall bear his own guilt.”

🩸⛔🐂 Summary of Leviticus 17 – Sanctify Blood and Offerings at the Place the Lord Has Set

Leviticus 17 introduces an important principle that blood belongs to the Lord and must not be treated carelessly. The Lord established that every offering may be presented only at the Tent of Meeting, and blood must not be eaten, because the life is in the blood.

1. Prohibition of Slaughter Outside the Tent of Meeting (verses 1–9)

  • All Israelites must bring the animal to be offered to the Tent of Meeting, not slaughter it anywhere in the field or in a private place.
  • Whoever offers a sacrifice outside the holy place → is regarded as shedding blood and must be cut off from the people.

📌 This protects Israel from idolatry and teaches the central place of worship to the Lord.

2. Prohibition of Eating Blood (verses 10–14)

  • The Lord strictly forbids the people of Israel (and the foreigners among them) from eating blood.
  • The reason:

“For the life of the creature is in its blood…” (verse 11)

    • Blood is given to make atonement on the altar.

🩸 Blood is not ordinary food—it is a holy means for the forgiveness of sin.

3. If Hunting a Wild Animal (verses 15–16)

  • If someone hunts a clean animal and slaughters it for food, its blood must be poured out and covered with earth.
  • Whoever eats carrion or the flesh of an animal that died on its own → must wash himself and be considered unclean until evening.

📖 Main Teaching

  1. An offering is valid only if it is presented at the place appointed by the Lord.
  2. Blood is most holy because it represents life and the means of atonement.
  3. Spiritual acts cannot be done carelessly—there are rules and a place for them.
  4. The Lord wants to keep His people away from pagan practices and idolatry.
  5. Even the way of eating and slaughtering must reflect reverence for God.

Spiritual Meaning

  • In the New Testament, the blood of Christ becomes the fulfillment of all the sacrificial blood in Leviticus.
Hebrews 9:22 – “Without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins.”
  • Jesus became the valid sacrifice, and His blood became the only means of eternal atonement.
  • We are no longer bound by the literal law about eating blood, but we are taught to honor the value of life and the sacrifice of Christ.
  • Leviticus 17 also teaches that worship must not be moved or changed as one pleases—it must follow God’s instructions.
  • The center of worship today is Christ, not a physical place, but a heart that is obedient and right.
