1
The LORD spoke to Moses:
2
“Speak to Aaron and his sons, that they should be careful with the holy offerings which the children of Israel consecrate to Me, lest they profane My holy name; I am the LORD.
3
Say to them: Whoever of all your descendants throughout your generations draws near to the holy offerings which the children of Israel consecrate to the LORD, while he is unclean, that person shall be cut off from before Me; I am the LORD.
4
No descendant of Aaron who has leprosy or a discharge shall eat of the holy offerings until he is clean; and whoever touches anything made unclean by the dead, or a man who has had an emission of semen,
5
or whoever touches any creeping thing by which he is made unclean, or any person by whom he is made unclean, whatever his uncleanness may be,
6
the person who touches any such thing shall be unclean until evening, and shall not eat of the holy offerings unless he has washed his body with water.
7
When the sun has set, he shall be clean, and afterward he may eat of the holy offerings, for that is his food.
8
He shall not eat an animal that dies of itself or what is torn by beasts, so that he may not become unclean by it; I am the LORD.
9
They shall therefore keep My charge, lest they bear sin because of it and die for it, because they profane it; I am the LORD, who sanctifies them.
10
No layman shall eat the holy thing; neither a sojourner with the priest nor a hired servant.
11
But if a priest buys a person with his money as his property, that person may eat of it, and also those who are born in his house.
12
If a priest’s daughter is married to a layman, she shall not eat of the special portion of the holy offerings.
13
But if the woman becomes a widow or is divorced, and has no child, and has returned to her father’s house as in her youth, then she may eat of her father’s food; but no layman shall eat it.
14
If anyone eats a holy offering unintentionally, he shall restore it to the priest, adding one-fifth to it.
15
The priests shall not profane the holy offerings of the children of Israel, which they set apart for the LORD,
16
for by doing this they would bring guilt upon the Israelites, which must be atoned for, when they eat their holy offerings; for I am the LORD, who sanctifies them.”
17
The LORD spoke to Moses:
18
“Speak to Aaron and his sons and to all the Israelites, and say to them: Whoever of the house of Israel, or of the strangers in Israel, presents his offering, whether it be a vow offering or a freewill offering, which they present to the LORD as a burnt offering,
19
that you may be accepted, it must be without blemish, from the cattle, from the sheep, or from the goats.
20
You shall not offer anything that has a defect, for it will not be accepted for you.
21
And when anyone offers to the LORD a peace offering to fulfill a special vow, or as a freewill offering from the herd or from the flock, it must be without blemish, to be accepted; there shall be no defect in it.
22
Anything blind, or broken, or maimed, or having a running sore, or scabbed, or scurvy, you shall not offer to the LORD, and you shall not place such a one as an offering by fire to the LORD on the altar.
23
But an ox or a sheep that has too long or too short a limb you may offer as a freewill offering, but for a vow offering the LORD will not accept that animal.
24
Also an animal whose testicles are crushed, bruised, torn, or cut, you shall not offer to the LORD; you shall not do this in your land.
25
Nor from the hand of a foreigner shall you offer any of these as the food of your God, because all of them are ruined and have defects; the LORD will not accept you because of these offerings.”
26
The LORD spoke to Moses:
27
“When an ox or a lamb or a goat is born, it shall remain seven days with its mother; but from the eighth day onward the LORD will accept it as an offering by fire to Him.
28
You shall not slaughter an ox or a goat or a sheep with its young on the same day.
29
And when you sacrifice a thanksgiving offering to the LORD, you shall sacrifice it so that you may be accepted.
30
It shall be eaten on that same day; you shall leave none of it until morning; I am the LORD.”
31
Thus you shall keep My commandments and do them; I am the LORD.
32
You shall not profane My holy name, but I will be sanctified among the children of Israel; I am the LORD who sanctifies you,
33
who brought you out of the land of Egypt, to be your God: I am the LORD.”
🕊️🔥🥖 Summary of Leviticus 22 – Holiness in Offerings and Priestly Service
Leviticus 22 continues the teaching about the holiness of the priests, especially when they touch or eat the holy offerings, and also sets forth the requirements for offerings fit for the Lord.
This chapter emphasizes that what is offered to the Lord must be holy, without blemish, and done with reverence.
📌 1. Regulations for Priests in Touching and Eating Offerings (verses 1–16)
- A priest who becomes unclean (because of skin disease, touching a corpse, or other uncleanness) may not eat the holy offerings until he is restored.
- If a priest breaks this command → he will bear guilt and must be punished.
- An outsider (not of priestly descent) may not eat any holy portion.
➤ Except if a foreigner becomes a priest’s slave—they may eat. - The people who unintentionally eat a holy portion → must repay it by adding one-fifth (20%).
🎯 Holiness is not only about bringing an offering, but also about who touches it and how it is consumed.
📌 2. Regulations Concerning Animal Offerings (verses 17–30)
- An offering to the Lord must be from flawless livestock—it must not have defects:
It must not be blind, lame, broken, wounded, or diseased.
No part of the body may be damaged (castrated).
- The offering must be at least 8 days old and must not be slaughtered with its mother on the same day.
📖 The Lord is worthy to receive the best, not what is left over or what is blemished.
📌 3. Closing Call: Honor the Name of the Lord (verses 31–33)
“Do not profane My holy name, so that I may be sanctified among the children of Israel…” (verse 32)
- The Lord declares:
➤ He is the One who brought the people out of Egypt.
➤ They are called to honor and sanctify His name.
📖 Main Teaching
- Holiness cannot be compromised in service and offerings.
- Offerings to the Lord must be the best, not leftovers or what is damaged.
- Not everyone may touch holy things—there are rules and limits.
- The Lord pays attention to small details as a sign of our respect for Him.
- The holiness of the priests reflects reverence for the name of the Lord.
✨ Spiritual Meaning
- In the New Testament, we are priests of God (1 Peter 2:9) → that is, we all bear responsibility to keep our lives and service holy.
- Jesus is the perfect offering without blemish (Hebrews 9:14), who once for all sanctifies us.
- We are called to present our bodies as a living and holy sacrifice (Romans 12:1).
- This principle reminds us to give the Lord our best—our time, strength, service, and our lives.
