1
The LORD spoke to Moses:
2
“Command the Israelites to bring you clear oil of pressed olives for the light so that the lamps may be kept burning.
3
Aaron is to tend the lamps before the curtain that shields the ark of the covenant law in the Tent of Meeting, from evening till morning, continually before the LORD. This is to be a lasting ordinance for the generations to come.
4
The lamps on the pure gold lampstand before the LORD must be tended continually.
5
“Take the finest flour and bake twelve loaves of bread from it; each loaf is to be made with two-tenths of an ephah.
6
Arrange them in two stacks, six in each stack, on the table of pure gold before the LORD.
7
Place pure incense on each stack to serve as a memorial portion for the bread and as an offering made to the LORD by fire.
8
This bread is to be set out before the LORD regularly, every Sabbath day, on behalf of the Israelites, as a lasting covenant.
9
It belongs to Aaron and his sons, who are to eat it in a holy place, because it is for them a most holy part of the offerings made to the LORD by fire, a lasting ordinance.”
10
Now the son of an Israelite woman and an Egyptian father went out among the Israelites, and a fight broke out in the camp between him and an Israelite.
11
The Israelite woman’s son blasphemed the Name with a curse, and they brought him to Moses. His mother’s name was Shelomith, the daughter of Dibri, of the tribe of Dan.
12
They put him in custody until the will of the LORD should be made clear to them.
13
Then the LORD said to Moses:
14
“Take the blasphemer outside the camp. All those who heard him are to lay their hands on his head, and the entire assembly is to stone him.
15
Say to the Israelites: Anyone who curses their God will be held responsible.
16
Anyone who blasphemes the name of the LORD is to be put to death. The entire assembly must stone them. Whether foreigner or native-born, when they blaspheme the Name, they are to be put to death.
17
Anyone who takes the life of a human being is to be put to death.
18
Anyone who takes the life of an animal must make restitution—life for life.
19
Anyone who injures their neighbor is to be injured in the same way:
20
fracture for fracture, eye for eye, tooth for tooth. The one who has inflicted the injury must suffer the same injury.
21
Whoever kills an animal must make restitution, but whoever kills a human being is to be put to death.
22
You are to have the same law for the foreigner and the native-born. I am the LORD your God.”
23
Then Moses spoke to the Israelites, and they took the blasphemer outside the camp and stoned him. So the Israelites did as the LORD commanded Moses.
🔥💡🍞⚖️ Summary of Leviticus 24 – Holy Light, Holy Bread, and God’s Law
Leviticus 24 covers three main sections:
- Instructions about the lamps and holy bread in the Tabernacle
- The account of blasphemy and the death penalty
- A just legal ordinance that applies fairly to everyone
This chapter shows the holiness of service, the holiness of God’s name, and impartial justice in the community of God’s people.
📌 1. The Lamp and the Bread of the Presence (verses 1–9)
- Pure olive oil was to be provided for the lamp that burned continually in the Tabernacle → tended by Aaron and the priests.
- Every Sabbath, twelve loaves were arranged in two rows (6+6) on the holy table, symbolizing the covenant bread for the Lord, to be eaten only by the priests.
🎯 This symbolizes:
- God’s light that never goes out among His people
- God’s continual provision for the people of Israel
- Ordered and reverent worship
📌 2. Blasphemy Against the Name of the LORD (verses 10–16)
- The son of an Israelite mother and an Egyptian father blasphemed the name of the LORD and cursed.
- After consulting the Lord, the death penalty was established: the man was stoned by the whole community.
- This became a permanent legal ordinance:
“Anyone who blasphemes the name of the LORD must surely be put to death.” (verse 16)
📖 The name of the LORD is not just a word—it represents God’s own person and glory.
📌 3. The Law of Retribution and Justice (verses 17–23)
- The law of “eye for eye, tooth for tooth” was established for:
Murder
Physical injury
Acts against people and animals
But all of it was to be carried out through law and judgment, not personal revenge.
📌 The main principle:
➡️ Law must be fair, proportional, and apply to everyone, whether Israelite or foreigner.
📖 Key Lessons
- Holy worship includes spiritual light and spiritual food that are continually maintained.
- The name of the Lord must be upheld and honored.
- God’s law is just and requires accountability for actions.
- There is no discrimination in the law—foreigner and native are equal before God.
- The life of God’s people is built on holiness and justice.
✨ Spiritual Meaning
- The lamp that keeps burning pictures Christ as the light of the world (John 8:12).
- The continual bread of the Presence symbolizes Jesus as the bread of life (John 6:35).
- Respect for the name of the Lord reminds us to:
➤ Not use His name carelessly (see the Lord’s Prayer: “hallowed be Your name”). - The law of “eye for eye” is fulfilled and perfected in Christ through love and forgiveness (Matthew 5:38–39), but the principle of justice and accountability still stands.
