Leviticus 6 – Laws for Guilt, Burnt, and Grain Offerings

1
The LORD spoke to Moses:

2
“When anyone sins and acts unfaithfully against the LORD, and deceives his neighbor about something entrusted to him, or something delivered to him, or something taken by force, or if he has extorted from his neighbor,

3
or if he finds something lost and deceives about it, and swears falsely—in any matter that anyone may do, so that he sins—

4
if, therefore, he has sinned and is guilty, he shall restore what he took by force, or what he extorted, or what was entrusted to him, or the lost thing that he found,

5
or anything about which he swore falsely. He shall make full restitution for it, adding one-fifth to it; he shall give it to its owner on the day he presents his guilt offering.

6
As his guilt offering he shall bring to the LORD a ram without blemish from the flock, according to your valuation, for a guilt offering, and he shall give it to the priest.

7
The priest shall make atonement for him before the LORD, and he shall be forgiven for anything that he may have done and become guilty of.”

8
The LORD spoke to Moses:

9
“Command Aaron and his sons, saying: This is the law of the burnt offering. The burnt offering shall remain on the hearth upon the altar all night until morning, and the fire of the altar shall be kept burning on it.

10
The priest shall put on his linen garment, and he shall put linen undergarments on his body. Then he shall take up the ashes to which the fire has reduced the burnt offering on the altar, and he shall put them beside the altar.

11
Then he shall take off his garments and put on other garments, and carry the ashes outside the camp to a clean place.

12
The fire on the altar shall be kept burning; it shall not go out. Every morning the priest shall put wood on it, arrange the burnt offering on it, and burn the fat of the peace offerings on it.

13
The fire shall be kept burning continually on the altar; it shall not go out.

14
This is the law of the grain offering. Aaron’s sons shall bring it before the LORD, in front of the altar.

15
After he has taken from the grain offering a handful of the finest flour with oil, and all the frankincense that is on the grain offering, he shall burn it all on the altar as a pleasing aroma, as its memorial portion to the LORD.

16
The remainder shall be eaten by Aaron and his sons; it shall be eaten as unleavened bread in a holy place; they shall eat it in the court of the Tent of Meeting.

17
It shall not be baked with leaven. I have given it as their portion from My offerings by fire; it is most holy, like the sin offering and the guilt offering.

18
Every male among the children of Aaron shall eat it; it is a statute forever throughout your generations; it is your portion from the offerings by fire of the LORD. Whoever touches them shall become holy.”

19
The LORD spoke to Moses, saying:

20
“This is the offering of Aaron and his sons, which they shall present to the LORD on the day he is anointed: one-tenth of an ephah of fine flour as a regular grain offering, half of it in the morning and half of it in the evening.

21
It shall be prepared on a griddle with oil; when it is mixed, you shall bring it and present it as a grain offering, broken in pieces, as a pleasing aroma to the LORD.

22
And the priest from among his sons who is anointed in his place shall prepare it; it is a statute forever. The whole of it shall be burned for the LORD.

23
Every grain offering of a priest shall be wholly burned; it shall not be eaten.”

24
The LORD spoke to Moses, saying:

25
“Speak to Aaron and his sons, saying: This is the law of the sin offering. In the place where the burnt offering is killed, there the sin offering shall be killed before the LORD. It is most holy.

26
The priest who offers the sin offering shall eat it; it shall be eaten in a holy place, in the court of the Tent of Meeting.

27
Whatever touches its flesh shall become holy; and if any of its blood is sprinkled on a garment, you shall wash the garment in a holy place.

28
And the earthen vessel in which it is boiled shall be broken; but if it is boiled in a bronze vessel, that vessel shall be scoured and rinsed with water.

29
Every male among the priests shall eat it; it is most holy.

30
But no sin offering, from whose blood any is brought into the Tent of Meeting to make atonement in the holy place, shall be eaten; it shall be burned with fire.”

🔥⚖️🐏 Summary of Leviticus 6 – The Guilt Offering and the Priests’ Duties

Leviticus 6 continues the discussion of the guilt offering (trespass offering) and introduces the duties of the priests in handling the offerings, the altar fire, and their portion from the offerings. It emphasizes the importance of responsibility, honesty, and holy, orderly worship.

1. The Guilt Offering: Restitution and Repentance (verses 1–7)

If someone sins against another person:

  • Stealing, deceiving, keeping something entrusted, robbing, or swearing falsely.
    ➡️ Then he must:
  1. Return the thing that was robbed/withheld
  2. Add 1/5 of its value (20%) as a penalty
  3. Offer an unblemished ram to the Lord as a guilt offering

🔁 This shows that forgiveness requires repentance and concrete restoration.

2. Law of the Burnt Offering – The Fire on the Altar Must Not Go Out (verses 8–13)

  • The priest must keep the fire on the altar burning continually.
  • Each morning, the priest brings wood, arranges the offering, and burns the fat of the fellowship offering.
🔥 “The fire must keep burning on the altar; it must not be allowed to go out.” (verse 13)

➡️ This symbolizes the spirit of worship and the presence of the Lord that remain alive.

3. Law of the Grain Offering (verses 14–23)

  • The grain offering from the Israelites: part is burned for the Lord, and the rest becomes the portion of the priests.
  • The priest must not offer it with leaven.
  • There is a special grain offering for the ordination of Aaron and his descendants—it must be wholly burned.

4. Law of the Sin Offering (verses 24–30)

  • This offering is most holy. Its meat may only be eaten by the priest, in a holy place.
  • If its blood is brought into the Holy Place, the whole offering must be burned up.
  • The vessel used must be consecrated or broken/washed clean depending on its material.

📖 Main Teaching

  1. Sin against one’s neighbor is also sin against the Lord, and it requires real restoration.
  2. The fire on the altar must keep burning—showing a spiritual life that keeps burning brightly.
  3. True worship must be orderly and according to the Lord’s command.
  4. The priests are responsible for guarding the holiness of worship and offerings.
  5. There is a portion for the Lord, a portion for the priests, and a portion for the people in worship—all have their function and share.

Spiritual Meaning

  • Forgiveness is not only about prayer, but also about real repentance and restored relationship.
  • The altar fire that must not go out symbolizes a spiritual life that must be kept each day—through prayer, the word, and worship.
  • Christ is our perfect sacrifice and High Priest, who keeps our worship alive before God.
  • The life of a believer is continuous service before the Lord, in holiness and in a burning zeal.
