When Jesus lifted up His eyes, He saw the rich putting their gifts into the offering box.

He also saw a poor widow putting in two small coins.

Then He said, “I tell you truly, this poor widow has put in more than all of them.

For they all gave out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty gave all the livelihood she had.”

When some were speaking about the temple and admiring the building, how it was adorned with beautiful stones and with various offerings, Jesus said:

“As for what you see here — the days will come when not one stone will be left upon another; all will be thrown down.”

And the disciples asked Jesus, saying, “Teacher, when will these things happen? And what will be the sign when these things are about to take place?”

He answered, “Watch out, so that you are not led astray. For many will come in My name, saying, ‘I am He,’ and, ‘The time is near.’ Do not follow them.

And when you hear of wars and rebellions, do not be alarmed. For these things must happen first, but that does not mean the end will come immediately.”

Then He said to them, “Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom,

and there will be great earthquakes, and in various places plagues and famines; and there will also be terrifying events and great signs from heaven.

But before all these things, you will be seized and persecuted; you will be handed over to synagogues and prisons, and you will be brought before kings and governors because of My name.

This will be an opportunity for you to bear witness.

Therefore settle it in your hearts not to think beforehand how you will defend yourselves.

For I Myself will give you words of wisdom, so that none of your opponents will be able to resist or refute you.

And you will be handed over even by your parents, your brothers, your relatives, and your friends, and some of you will be put to death

and you will be hated by all because of My name.

But not a hair of your head will perish.

By your endurance you will gain your lives.”

“When you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, know that its destruction is near.

At that time those who are in Judea must flee to the mountains, and those who are in the city must leave, and those who are in the countryside must not enter the city again,

for these are the days of vengeance, when all that is written will be fulfilled.

Woe to the women who are pregnant or nursing babies in those days! For there will be great distress upon the whole land and wrath upon this people,

and they will fall by the edge of the sword and be led captive among all nations, and Jerusalem will be trampled by the nations that do not know God, until the times of the nations are fulfilled.”

“And there will be signs in the sun and moon and stars, and on the earth the nations will be afraid and confused by the roaring and surging of the sea.

People will faint from fear and from anxiety over all that is coming upon the earth, for the powers of the heavens will be shaken.

At that time people will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with all His power and glory.

When these things begin to happen, stand up and lift up your heads, because your salvation is near.”

Then Jesus told them this parable: “Look at the fig tree, or any tree.

When you see the trees already budding, you know for yourselves that summer is near.

31
So also, when you see these things happening, know that the kingdom of God is near.

Truly I say to you: this generation will not pass away until all these things have happened.

Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will not pass away.”

“Be on your guard, so that your hearts are not weighed down by carousing and drunkenness and worldly concerns, and so that that day does not suddenly come upon you like a trap.

For it will come upon all the inhabitants of this earth.

Be watchful at all times, praying that you may have strength to escape all these things that will happen, and to stand before the Son of Man.”

By day Jesus was teaching in the Temple, and by night He went out and stayed on the mountain called the Mount of Olives.

This chapter includes two main sections:

1. The Poor Widow’s Offering (verses 1–4)

Jesus saw people giving offerings.
A poor widow gave two small coins (a very small amount).

“This widow gave more than all the others, because she gave out of her lack.”

The value of an offering is not in its amount, but in the heart and sacrifice that accompany it. The Lord sees sincerity, not appearance.

2. Prophecy about the Destruction of the Temple (verses 5–6)

The disciples were amazed as they looked at the beauty of the Temple.
Jesus foretold that not one stone would be left upon another.

Jesus foretold the siege and destruction of Jerusalem.
People were told to flee when they saw those signs.
That time was a “time of retribution” because of the rejection of the Messiah.

Rejection of Jesus brings serious consequences. However, the Lord gives warning beforehand so that people may repent.

5. The Coming of the Son of Man (verses 25–28)

There will be signs in the sun, moon, and stars.
People will be afraid because of the shaking of the world.
At that time Jesus will come in a cloud with great power and glory.

Jesus said:

“If all these things begin to happen, stand up and lift up your faces, because your salvation is near.”

👉 Meaning:
The coming of Jesus is hope, not a threat, for believers.

6. The Parable of the Fig Tree (verses 29–33)

The fig tree becomes a symbol that the signs of the times can be recognized, like summer that can be predicted from the budding of a tree.
Jesus affirms that His word endures forever:

“Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will not pass away.”

7. Exhortation to Be Watchful (verses 34–38)

Jesus warns that:
- Do not be weighed down by revelry and the worries of life.
- Always be watchful and pray.
The day of the Lord will come suddenly like a snare upon all the inhabitants of the earth.

A life of watchfulness and alertness is a calling for every believer. We must not live carelessly, for the day of the Lord is drawing near.
