but very early on the first day of the week they went to the tomb, bringing the spices they had prepared.

They found the stone rolled away from the tomb,

That same day two of Jesus’ disciples were going to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem,

One of them, named Cleopas, answered Him: “Are You the only stranger in Jerusalem who does not know what has happened there in these recent days?”

He said to them: “What things?” They answered: “The things concerning Jesus of Nazareth. He was a prophet, mighty in deed and word before God and before all our people.

But the chief priests and our rulers handed Him over to be sentenced to death, and they crucified Him.

Yet we had hoped that He was the one who was going to redeem Israel. But now it is the third day since all these things happened.

But some women from among us have astonished us: early this morning they went to the tomb,

and did not find His body. Then they came with the report that angels had appeared to them, saying that He was alive.

And some of our companions went to the tomb and found that it was indeed as the women had said, but Him they did not see.”

Then He said to them: “O foolish ones, how slow of heart you are to believe all that the prophets have spoken!

Was it not necessary for the Messiah to suffer these things and to enter into His glory?”

Then He explained to them what was written about Him in all the Scriptures, beginning with the books of Moses and all the books of the prophets.

They came near the village to which they were going, and He acted as though He would continue on His way.

But they urged Him strongly, saying: “Stay with us, for it is toward evening and the sun is nearly setting.” So He went in to stay with them.

When He sat down to eat with them, He took bread, blessed it, broke it, and gave it to them.

Then their eyes were opened and they recognized Him, but He vanished from their midst.

They said to one another: “Were not our hearts burning within us while He spoke with us on the road and while He opened the Scriptures to us?”

1. The Resurrection of Jesus (verses 1–12)

The women came to the tomb early on the first day of the week with spices.
They found the stone rolled away and the body of Jesus was not there.

They told the apostles; Peter ran to the tomb and found only the burial cloths.
