Then they came to the other side of the lake, to the region of the Gerasenes.

Just as Jesus had stepped out of the boat, a man with an unclean spirit came to meet Him from the tombs.

He lived among the tombs, and no one could bind him anymore, not even with chains,

for he had often been bound with shackles and chains, but he would break the chains and smash the shackles, and no one was strong enough to subdue him.

Day and night he was among the tombs and on the hills, crying out and cutting himself with stones.

When he saw Jesus from a distance, he ran and fell down before Him,

and with a loud voice he cried out, “What have You to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg You by God, do not torment me!”

For Jesus had said to him, “Unclean spirit, come out of this man!”

Then He asked him, “What is your name?” He answered, “My name is Legion, for we are many.”

And he begged Him earnestly not to send the spirits out of that region.

Now a large herd of pigs was feeding there on the hillside,

and the spirits begged Him, saying, “Send us into the pigs; let us enter them!”

Jesus gave them permission. Then the unclean spirits came out and entered the pigs. The herd, about two thousand in number, rushed down the steep bank into the lake and were drowned in it.

The herdsmen fled and told it in the city and in the surrounding villages. Then people came out to see what had happened.

They came to Jesus and saw the man who had been possessed by demons sitting there, clothed and in his right mind—the one who had had the legion. And they were afraid.

Those who had seen it told them what had happened to the demon-possessed man and about the pigs.

Then they began to beg Jesus to leave their region.

As Jesus was getting into the boat, the man who had been possessed by demons begged to go with Him.

But Jesus did not permit him, and He said to the man, “Go home to your own people, and tell them all that the Lord has done for you, and how He has had mercy on you!”

So the man went away and began to proclaim in the Decapolis all that Jesus had done for him, and everyone was amazed.

After Jesus had crossed over again by boat, a great crowd gathered around Him and pressed in on Him. While He was by the lakeside,

there came one of the rulers of the synagogue, named Jairus. When he saw Jesus, he fell at His feet

and pleaded with Him earnestly, saying, “My little daughter is very sick, almost dead. Please come and lay Your hands on her, so that she may be healed and live.”

So Jesus went with him. A great crowd followed Him and pressed close around Him.

And there was a woman there who had suffered from bleeding for twelve years.

She had been treated again and again by many physicians, and had spent all she had, yet it had done her no good; rather, her condition had grown worse.

She had heard reports about Jesus, so she came up behind Him in the crowd and touched His garment.

For she said, “If I only touch His garment, I will be healed.”

At once the bleeding stopped, and she felt in her body that she was healed of her affliction.

At that very moment Jesus knew that power had gone out from Him, and He turned around in the crowd and asked, “Who touched My garment?”

His disciples answered, “You see how these people are pressing around You, and You ask, ‘Who touched Me?'”

Then He looked around to see who had done this.

But the woman, fearing and trembling because she knew what had happened to her, came forward and fell down before Jesus and told Him the whole truth.

Then He said to the woman, “Daughter, your faith has saved you. Go in peace, and be healed of your affliction!”

While Jesus was still speaking, some people came from the house of the ruler of the synagogue and said, “Your daughter is dead. Why trouble the Teacher any further?”

But Jesus paid no attention to what they said and said to the ruler of the synagogue, “Do not be afraid; only believe!”

Then He did not allow anyone to accompany Him except Peter, James, and John, the brother of James.

They came to the house of the ruler of the synagogue, and there He saw people in confusion, weeping and wailing loudly.

After He went in, He said to them, “Why are you making a commotion and weeping? The child is not dead, but sleeping!”

But they laughed at Him.

Then He put them all out, and He took the child’s father and mother and those who were with Him, and went in where the child was.

Then He took the child by the hand and said to her, “Talita kum,” which means, “Little girl, I say to you, arise!”

Immediately the girl got up and walked, for she was twelve years old. And they were greatly astonished.

Then He strictly charged them that no one should know about it, and He told them to give her something to eat.

- A man possessed by many demons lived among the tombs and could not be controlled by anyone.

The Woman with a Bleeding Condition for 12 Years (verses 25–34):

- She was healed at once; Jesus felt power go out from Him and called her.
- He said:

Jairus’ Daughter Raised (verses 21–24, 35–43):
- Jairus, a ruler of the synagogue, asked Jesus to heal his sick daughter.
- While they were on the way, word came that his daughter had died.
- Jesus said:
  “Do not be afraid; only believe!”
- He arrived, said that the child was only sleeping, then raised her with the words:
  “Talita kum,” meaning: “Little girl, arise!”

Nothing is too broken for Jesus to save. The possessed man is proof that God is able to restore anyone.
Active faith touches the heart of God. The sick woman believed and acted—that is true faith.
When all hope is gone, Jesus says: “Do not be afraid; only believe.”
Jesus restores dignity, not only the body. He addressed the woman as “My daughter,” giving identity and love.
