In the story of Jesus’ birth, there is one small yet deeply meaningful detail about Mary, His mother. Luke 2:19 says, “But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart.” She did not speak much or seek the spotlight; instead, she chose to treasure and reflect on the word and works of God that she experienced.
To treasure the word in our hearts means not only to hear it, but also to let it take root and change the way we see life. Mary did not always immediately understand God’s plan. When the angel said she would give birth to the Messiah, that was certainly not easy to receive. Yet instead of rejecting it or questioning it endlessly, she chose to believe and keep it in her heart.
We are often tempted to demand answers from God right away. We want everything to be clear now. But the journey of faith is not always about understanding everything at the beginning. True faith is not about having a lot of information, but about a heart that believes even when not everything is yet visible.
Mary is a picture of a believer who is not in a hurry. She did not feel the need to give long explanations to others about what was happening. She was content to treasure, ponder, and let God Himself prove His word. There lies both humility and spiritual strength.
In daily life, treasuring the word in our hearts can mean:
- Remembering God’s promises even when circumstances seem to say otherwise.
- Not being quickly shaken when prayers have not yet been answered.
- Learning to meditate on the Word instead of merely reading past it.
- Keeping our hearts calm even when others belittle our faith.
The word that is treasured will become a source of strength when the storm comes. When Mary stood at the foot of the cross and saw Jesus suffer, she surely remembered again all that she had treasured from the beginning: the angel’s promise, the miracle of His birth, and the prophecies that had been spoken. Without that, she might have already given up in sorrow.
Are you waiting for God’s promise today? Perhaps the answer is not yet visible. Perhaps the path feels unclear. Follow Mary’s example: treasure that word in your heart, ponder it, and let God fulfill His promise in His time.
Father, teach me to be like Mary, who not only heard the word but also treasured it in her heart. Help me to believe even when I do not fully understand, and to remain faithful in pondering Your promises until You reveal their fulfillment. Amen.
