Hear the crack of the whip, the rumble of wheels! Hear the galloping horses, and the bounding chariots!

Charging horsemen, flashing swords and glittering spears! Many are slain, and heaps of corpses! There is no end to the dead bodies; they stumble over the bodies!

All because of the many acts of harlotry of the seductive woman, graceful in appearance and skilled in sorcery, who entices nations by her harlotries and peoples by her sorceries.

Behold, I am against you, declares the LORD of hosts; I will lift up your skirt over your face and show your nakedness to the nations and your shame to the kingdoms.

I will throw abominable things upon you, make you despised, and set you up as a spectacle.

Then all who see you will flee from you and say, “Nineveh is laid waste! Who will mourn for her? From where shall I seek comforters for her?”

Are you better than Thebes, the city of Amon, which sat by the Nile, with waters around her, whose wall was the sea, and her rampart the water?

Cush was her strength, and Egypt too, without limit; Put and the Libyans were her helpers.

Yet she too went into exile, she went into captivity; her little ones also were dashed to pieces at the head of every street; for her honored men lots were cast, and all her great men were bound in chains.

You also will become drunk; you will be helpless; you also will seek refuge from the enemy.

All your fortresses are like fig trees with first-ripe figs; if shaken, they fall into the mouth of the eater.

Behold, your troops in your midst are women; the gates of your land are wide open to your enemies; fire has consumed your bars.

Draw water for the siege; strengthen your fortresses! Tread the clay, trample the mortar, take hold of the brick mold!

There the fire will consume you; the sword will cut you down; it will consume you like the locust. Multiply yourselves like the locust, multiply yourselves like the swarming locust!

You have increased your merchants more than the stars of the heavens; the locust spreads its wings and flies away.

Even though your guards are like migrating locusts, and your officials like a swarm of locusts that settle on the walls in the cold, yet when the sun rises, they flee away, and no one knows where they are.

Woe! How deeply your shepherds sleep, O king of Assyria! Your nobles slumber; your army is scattered on the mountains, and there is no one to gather them.

There is no healing for your injury; your wound is beyond cure. All who hear the report of you clap their hands over you; for upon whom has not your evil continually come?

→ As the nations rejoiced over Babylon’s fall, so also over Nineveh’s fall.
