1
Korah son of Izhar, son of Kohath, son of Levi, together with Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab, and On son of Peleth, the three sons of Reuben, stirred up men
2
to rebel against Moses, along with two hundred and fifty men of Israel, leaders of the congregation, men chosen by the assembly, men of renown.
3
So they gathered together against Moses and Aaron and said to them, “You have gone far enough! For all the congregation are holy, every one of them, and the LORD is among them. Why then do you exalt yourselves above the assembly of the LORD?”
4
When Moses heard it, he fell on his face.
5
And he said to Korah and all his company, “In the morning the LORD will show who is His, and who is holy, and will bring him near to Himself; the one whom He chooses He will bring near to Himself.
6
Do this: take censers, Korah, and all your company,
7
put fire in them and lay incense on them before the LORD tomorrow; and the man whom the LORD chooses, he shall be holy. You Levites have gone far enough!”
8
Then Moses said to Korah, “Hear now, you Levites!
9
Is it too small a thing for you that the God of Israel has separated you from the congregation of Israel, to bring you near to Himself, to do the service of the tabernacle of the LORD, and to stand before the congregation to minister to them,
10
and that He has brought you near, and all your brothers the sons of Levi with you? And now do you seek the priesthood also?
11
Therefore you and all your company are gathered together against the LORD. And what is Aaron, that you complain against him?”
12
Then Moses sent to call Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab, but they said, “We will not come up.
13
Is it a small thing that you have brought us up out of a land flowing with milk and honey, to kill us in the wilderness, that you must also make yourself a prince over us?
14
Moreover, you have not brought us into a land flowing with milk and honey, nor given us inheritance of fields and vineyards. Will you put out the eyes of these men? We will not come up.”
15
Then Moses was very angry and said to the LORD, “Do not regard their offering. I have not taken one donkey from them, nor have I wronged any one of them.”
16
Then Moses said to Korah, “You and all your company must present yourselves before the LORD tomorrow, you and they and Aaron.
17
Each of you take his censer, put incense on it, and each of you bring his censer before the LORD, two hundred and fifty censers; you also, and Aaron, each bring his censer.”
18
So each man took his censer, put fire in it, laid incense on it, and stood at the entrance of the Tent of Meeting, with Moses and Aaron also.
19
When Korah had gathered all the congregation against them at the entrance of the Tent of Meeting, the glory of the LORD appeared to all the congregation.
20
Then the LORD spoke to Moses and Aaron:
21
“Separate yourselves from among this congregation, that I may consume them in a moment.”
22
But they fell on their faces and said, “O God, God of the spirits of all flesh, shall one man sin, and will You be angry with the whole congregation?”
23
Then the LORD spoke to Moses:
24
“Speak to the congregation, saying, ‘Move away from around the dwelling of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram.’”
25
Then Moses went to Dathan and Abiram, and the elders of Israel followed him.
26
He spoke to the congregation, saying, “Please move away from the tents of these wicked men, and touch nothing that belongs to them, lest you be swept away because of all their sins.”
27
So they moved away from around the dwelling of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram. Then Dathan and Abiram came out and stood at the entrance of their tents, together with their wives, their sons, and their little children.
28
Then Moses said, “By this you shall know that the LORD has sent me to do all these works, and that it has not come from my own heart:
29
if these men die the common death of all men, and if they are visited by what all men are visited with, then the LORD has not sent me.
30
But if the LORD creates something new, and the ground opens its mouth and swallows them up with all that belongs to them, so that they go down alive into Sheol, then you shall know that these men have despised the LORD.”
31
As soon as he had finished speaking all these words, the ground under them split apart,
32
and the earth opened its mouth and swallowed them, with their households and all the people who belonged to Korah, and all their possessions.
33
So they and all who belonged to them went down alive into Sheol; and the earth covered them, and they perished from among the assembly.
34
And all the Israelites who were around them fled at the sound of their cry, for they said, “Lest the earth swallow us up also!”
35
Then fire came out from the LORD and consumed the two hundred and fifty men who were offering the incense.
36
The LORD spoke to Moses:
37
“Tell Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, to take up the censers from among the blaze, and scatter the fire far away, for they are holy,
38
the censers of those sinners who paid with their lives. Then let them be hammered out into thin plates as a covering for the altar, because they were brought before the LORD by those men; therefore they are holy. Thus they shall be a sign to the Israelites.”
39
So Eleazar the priest took the bronze censers that had been brought by the men who were burned, and they were hammered out as a covering for the altar.
40
It became a reminder to the Israelites, so that no outsider, who is not of the descendants of Aaron, should come near to burn incense before the LORD, and so that he would not become like Korah and his company, as the LORD had spoken to him through Moses.
41
But on the next day the whole congregation of Israel grumbled against Moses and Aaron, saying, “You have killed the people of the LORD.”
42
When the congregation gathered against Moses and Aaron, and they turned toward the Tent of Meeting, behold, the cloud covered it, and the glory of the LORD appeared.
43
Then Moses and Aaron went to the front of the Tent of Meeting.
44
The LORD spoke to Moses:
45
“Get away from among this congregation, that I may destroy them in a moment.” Then they fell on their faces.
46
Moses said to Aaron, “Take the censer, put fire in it from the altar, lay incense on it, and go quickly to the congregation and make atonement for them, for wrath has gone out from the LORD, and the plague has begun.”
47
So Aaron took the censer, as Moses had said, and ran into the midst of the assembly; and behold, the plague had already begun among the people. Then he put on the incense and made atonement for the people.
48
When he stood between the dead and the living, the plague was stopped.
49
Those who died by the plague were fourteen thousand seven hundred, besides those who died in the matter of Korah.
50
When Aaron returned to Moses at the entrance of the Tent of Meeting, the plague had stopped.

Numbers 16 presents one of the most serious rebellions in the Old Testament: Korah, Dathan, and Abiram opposed Moses and Aaron. They questioned spiritual authority, and in the end were judged dramatically by God.

“You have killed the LORD’s people!”
- The Lord was angry and sent a plague — 14,700 people died.
