1
The LORD spoke to Moses:
2
“Command the Israelites and say to them: When you enter the land of Canaan, this is the land that shall fall to you as an inheritance, the land of Canaan according to its boundaries.
3
Your southern side shall be from the wilderness of Zin along Edom, and your southern boundary shall begin at the end of the Salt Sea on the east.
4
Then your boundary shall turn south of the ascent of Akrabbim, pass on to Zin, and end south of Kadesh-barnea. After that it shall reach Hazar-addar, and continue to Azmon.
5
Then the boundary shall turn from Azmon to the brook of Egypt, and end at the sea.
6
Your western boundary shall be the Great Sea and its coast; this shall be your western boundary.
7
This shall be your northern boundary: from the Great Sea you shall mark out a boundary to Mount Hor,
8
from Mount Hor you shall mark out a boundary to the entrance of Hamath, and the boundary shall reach Zedad.
9
Then the boundary shall reach Ziphron and end at Hazar-enan; this shall be your northern boundary.
10
For your eastern boundary you shall mark out a boundary from Hazar-enan to Shepham.
11
From Shepham the boundary shall go down to Riblah, on the east of Ain; then the boundary shall go down again and reach the slope east of the Sea of Kinnereth.
12
Then the boundary shall go down to the Jordan and end at the Salt Sea. This shall be your land according to its surrounding boundaries.”
13
Moses commanded the Israelites: “This is the land that you shall divide as an inheritance by lot, which the LORD has commanded to be given to the nine and a half tribes.
14
For the tribe of the descendants of Reuben according to their clans, and the tribe of the descendants of Gad according to their clans, have received their inheritance; also the half-tribe of Manasseh has received its inheritance.
15
The two and a half tribes have received their inheritance across the Jordan, near Jericho, on the east side.”
16
The LORD spoke to Moses:
17
“These are the names of the men who shall divide the land among you as an inheritance: Eleazar the priest, and Joshua son of Nun.
18
You shall also take one leader from each tribe to divide the land as an inheritance.
19
These are the names of the men: from the tribe of Judah, Caleb son of Jephunneh;
20
from the tribe of the descendants of Simeon, Shemuel son of Ammihud;
21
from the tribe of Benjamin, Elidad son of Chislon;
22
from the tribe of the descendants of Dan, a leader, Bukki son of Jogli;
23
from the descendants of Joseph, from the tribe of the descendants of Manasseh, a leader, Hanniel son of Ephod;
24
and from the tribe of the descendants of Ephraim, a leader, Kemuel son of Shiphtan;
25
from the tribe of the descendants of Zebulun, a leader, Elizaphan son of Parnach;
26
from the tribe of the descendants of Issachar, a leader, Paltiel son of Azzan;
27
from the tribe of the sons of Asher, a leader: Ahihud son of Shelomi;
28
from the tribe of the sons of Naphtali, a leader: Pedahel son of Ammihud.
29
These are the ones whom the LORD commanded to apportion the inheritance to the Israelites in the land of Canaan.”
🗺️📐⚖️ Summary of Numbers 34 – The Borders of the Land of Canaan and the Division by the Leaders
Numbers 34 is the chapter that sets the geographical boundaries of the Promised Land that would be occupied by the nation of Israel after crossing the Jordan River. The LORD, in detail, established the borders of that territory and appointed leaders from each tribe to divide the land.
This chapter shows that God not only promised the land, but also determined how that blessing would be distributed fairly and in order.
📌 1. The Borders of the Land of Canaan (verses 1–15)
- The LORD explains four main borders:
On the south: from the wilderness of Zin to Kadesh-barnea.
On the west: along the Great Sea (the Mediterranean Sea).
On the north: from Mount Hor to Lebo-hamath.
On the east: following the Jordan River to the Salt Sea (the Dead Sea).
- The land in view is for nine and a half tribes (because the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and half of Manasseh had already received their portion on the east side of the Jordan, chapter 32).
🎯 God is orderly and specific in giving an inheritance to His people.
📌 2. Appointment of the Leaders for Dividing the Land (verses 16–29)
- The LORD appointed Joshua son of Nun and Eleazar the high priest as the chief leaders in the division of the land.
- Then the LORD also appointed one leader from each tribe, including:
Caleb son of Jephunneh from the tribe of Judah,
Palti from the tribe of Benjamin,
and so on.
🎯 Each tribe had recognized and trusted representatives, showing the importance of structure and leadership in the community of faith.
📖 Main Teaching
- God’s promise is accompanied by detailed statutes and planning.
- God not only delivers His people, but also orders their lives with boundaries and responsibilities.
- Spiritual leaders are tasked not only with general guidance, but also with ensuring that the distribution of blessings is fair.
- Boundaries of territory are protection and order, not mere limitation.
- Blessed possession must be based on God’s will and His appointed order.
✨ Spiritual Meaning (New Testament)
- The Promised Land is a picture of spiritual blessing and abundant life in Christ.
- Divine boundaries speak of living in holiness and order (1 Corinthians 14:33, 40).
- The leaders who divided the inheritance portray the servants of God entrusted to build up and distribute spiritual blessing to the people (Ephesians 4:11–13).
🎯 Spiritual blessing too must be distributed in an orderly and responsible way through holy and firm leadership.
