The heads of the fathers’ houses of the clan of the sons of Gilead son of Machir son of Manasseh, one of the clans of the sons of Joseph, came near and spoke before Moses and the leaders, the heads of the tribes of the children of Israel,

and they said, “The LORD commanded my lord to give the land to the children of Israel as an inheritance by lot, and the LORD commanded my lord to give the inheritance of Zelophehad our brother to his daughters.

But if they marry any of the sons of the other tribes of the children of Israel, then their inheritance will be taken from the inheritance of our fathers and added to the inheritance of the tribe into which they marry; so it will be taken away from the inheritance allotted to us.
4
And when the Jubilee year comes for the children of Israel, their inheritance will be added to the inheritance of the tribe into which they marry and will be taken away from the inheritance of the tribe of our fathers.”

Then Moses commanded the children of Israel according to the word of the LORD, saying, “The tribe of the sons of Joseph speaks rightly.

This is the word that the LORD has commanded concerning the daughters of Zelophehad, saying: Let them marry whom they think best, only let them marry within the family of the tribe of their father.
7
For the inheritance of the children of Israel shall not pass from tribe to tribe, but each of the children of Israel shall keep the inheritance of the tribe of his fathers.
8
And every daughter among the tribes of the children of Israel who has inherited an inheritance shall marry one of the family of the tribe of her father, so that each of the children of Israel may possess the inheritance of his fathers.
9
Thus the inheritance shall not pass from one tribe to another tribe, but the tribes of the children of Israel shall each keep their own inheritance.”

As the LORD commanded Moses, so the daughters of Zelophehad did.
11
For Mahlah, Tirzah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Noah, the daughters of Zelophehad, married the sons of their father’s brothers;

they married men of the families of the sons of Manasseh son of Joseph, and their inheritance remained in the tribe of their father’s family.

These are the commandments and the ordinances that the LORD commanded the children of Israel through Moses in the plains of Moab by the Jordan near Jericho.

Numbers 36 deals with the special case of the daughters of Zelophehad, from the tribe of Manasseh, who had previously been allowed by God to receive an inheritance of land because their father had no sons (see Numbers 27).
This time, however, a concern arose among the heads of the tribe of Manasseh that if these women married men from another tribe, their inheritance would pass out of the tribe.
