The LORD spoke to Moses in the wilderness of Sinai, in the first month of the second year after they had come out of the land of Egypt:

“The Israelites shall keep the Passover at its appointed time;

on the fourteenth day of this month, at twilight, you shall keep it at its appointed time; according to all its statutes and ordinances you shall keep it.”

So Moses told the Israelites to keep the Passover.

And they kept the Passover in the first month, on the fourteenth day of the month, at twilight, in the wilderness of Sinai; just as the LORD commanded Moses, so the Israelites did.

But there were some men who were unclean because of a dead body, so that they could not keep the Passover on that day. They came before Moses and Aaron that same day,

and said to him, “Though we are unclean because of a dead body, why should we be kept from presenting the offering of the LORD among the Israelites at its appointed time?”

Moses said to them, “Wait, and I will hear what the LORD will command concerning you.”

Then the LORD spoke to Moses:

“Speak to the Israelites: If any one of you or of your descendants is unclean because of a dead body, or is on a distant journey, he shall still keep the Passover to the LORD.
11
In the second month, on the fourteenth day, at twilight, they shall keep it; with unleavened bread and bitter herbs they shall eat it.
12
They shall leave none of it until morning, and they shall not break a bone of it. According to all the statutes of the Passover they shall keep it.
13
But the man who is clean and not on a journey, yet neglects to keep the Passover, that person shall be cut off from among his people, because he did not present the offering to the LORD at its appointed time; that person shall bear the consequences of his sin.
14
And if a foreigner who lives among you wishes to keep the Passover to the LORD, he shall do so according to all the statutes and ordinances of the Passover. One statute shall apply to you, both for the foreigner and for the native-born Israelite.”

On the day the Tabernacle was set up, the cloud covered the Tabernacle, the tent of the testimony; and at night, from evening until morning, the cloud was over the Tabernacle, appearing like fire.

So it was always: the cloud covered the Tent, and at night it appeared like fire.

Whenever the cloud lifted from above the Tent, the Israelites would set out; and in the place where the cloud settled, there the Israelites camped.
18
At the command of the LORD the Israelites set out, and at the command of the LORD they camped; as long as the cloud remained over the Tabernacle, they stayed camped.
19
When the cloud remained over the Tabernacle for many days, the Israelites kept the charge of the LORD and did not set out.
20
Sometimes the cloud remained only a few days over the Tabernacle; then at the command of the LORD they camped, and at the command of the LORD they set out.
21
Sometimes the cloud remained from evening until morning; when the cloud lifted in the morning, they set out. Whether by day or by night, whenever the cloud lifted, they set out.
22
Whether the cloud stayed over the Tabernacle for two days, or a month, or longer, the Israelites remained camped and did not set out; but when it lifted, they set out.

At the command of the LORD they camped, and at the command of the LORD they set out; they kept the charge of the LORD, according to the command of the LORD through Moses.

📌 1. Passover in the Wilderness (verses 1–14)
- The Lord commanded Moses that the Israelites should keep the Passover on the 14th day of the first month, according to the ordinance.
- However, there were some people who were unclean because of contact with a dead body, so they could not take part in the Passover.
🔄 So the Lord provided a solution:
- They may keep the Passover in the second month, on the 14th day — this is called the Second Passover.
- A person who is not unclean or not on a journey, but deliberately does not take part, will be punished and cut off from the people of the Lord.
📖 The Lord makes room for those who long to obey but are hindered by circumstances—His grace is made clear.
📌 2. The Pillar of Cloud and the Pillar of Fire (verses 15–23)
- On the day the Holy Tent was set up, the pillar of cloud came down and covered the Tent.
- By night, the cloud became like a blazing fire.
- That pillar of cloud and fire became the guide for Israel’s journey:
If the cloud rose → they set out
If the cloud remained → they stayed
However long the cloud stayed over the Tent, the people had to wait
🎯 The Lord became the direct guide of His people, and they had to obey even without knowing how long they must remain or travel.

- The pillar of cloud and fire pictures the guidance of the Holy Spirit, who leads our lives now (Romans 8:14).
- God’s people must not go ahead of the Lord or lag behind—timely obedience is a form of faith.
