The vision of Obadiah.
Thus says the Lord GOD concerning Edom—
a report we have heard from the LORD,
and a messenger has been sent among the nations:
“Rise up, let us rise against her for battle!”—

Behold, I will make you small among the nations;
you shall be greatly despised.
3
The pride of your heart has deceived you,
you who dwell in the clefts of the rock,
in the height of your habitation;
you who say in your heart,
“Who will bring me down to the ground?”
4
Though you soar high like the eagle,
and though your nest is set among the stars,
from there I will bring you down,” declares the LORD.
5
If thieves came to you by night,
or robbers—how you would be ruined!—
would they not steal only what they needed?
If grape gatherers came to you,
would they not leave gleanings behind?

How Esau has been searched out,
his hidden treasures sought out!
7
All your allies have driven you to the border;
those at peace with you have deceived you and prevailed against you.
Those who eat your bread have set a trap beneath you.
—There is no understanding in him.
8
Will I not in that day, declares the LORD,
destroy the wise men from Edom,
and understanding from the hill country of Esau?
9
Your mighty men, O Teman, shall be dismayed,
so that every one from the hill country of Esau may be cut off by slaughter.
10
Because of violence done to your brother Jacob,
shame shall cover you,
and you shall be cut off forever.
11
On the day you stood aloof,
while strangers carried off his wealth
and foreigners entered his gates
and cast lots over Jerusalem,
you were like one of them.
12
Do not look down on your brother in the day of his misfortune,
and do not rejoice over the people of Judah in the day of their ruin;
do not boast in the day of distress.
13
Do not enter the gate of my people in the day of their calamity;
do not gloat over his disaster in the day of his calamity;
and do not seize his wealth in the day of his calamity.
14
Do not stand at the crossroads to cut off his fugitives,
and do not hand over his survivors in the day of distress.
15
For the day of the LORD is near upon all nations.
As you have done, it shall be done to you;
your deeds shall return upon your own head.
16
For as you have drunk on my holy mountain,
so all the nations shall drink continually;
yes, they shall drink and swallow down,
and they shall be as though they had never been.
17
But on Mount Zion there shall be those who escape,
and it shall be a holy place;
and the house of Jacob shall again possess its own possessions.
18
The house of Jacob shall be a fire,
and the house of Joseph a flame,
and the house of Esau stubble:
they shall burn them up and consume them,
and there shall be no survivor of the house of Esau,
for the LORD has spoken it.
19
Then those of the Negeb shall possess the mountains of Esau,
and those of the Shephelah shall possess the land of the Philistines.
They shall possess the territory of Ephraim and the territory of Samaria,
and Benjamin shall possess Gilead.
20
The exiles of Israel
shall possess the land of the Canaanites as far as Zarephath;
and the exiles of Jerusalem who are in Sepharad
shall possess the cities of the Negeb.
21
Deliverers shall go up to Mount Zion
to judge the mountains of Esau;
and the kingdom shall be the LORD’s.
⚖️🔥⛰️ Summary of Obadiah 1 – Judgment on Edom and the Restoration of Zion
This book is a prophecy concerning Edom, the descendants of Esau, who were full of pride and hostility toward Israel, their own brother. Yet God declares that betrayal will not be allowed forever. Instead, Mount Zion will be restored.
📌 1. The Lord Against the Pride of Edom (verses 1–9)
- Obadiah received a vision from the Lord concerning Edom.
- Edom had boasted in its high geographic position and its strength.
“You who dwell in the clefts of the rock… who say in your heart, ‘Who will bring me down to the ground?’” (verse 3)
- The Lord declares that Edom will be brought low:
“Though you set your nest high like the eagle… I will bring you down from there.” (verse 4)
- Even Edom’s wise men and warriors will perish.
🎯 Pride is the root of downfall — the Lord opposes the proud.
📌 2. Edom’s Betrayal of Israel (verses 10–14)
- Edom is found guilty because it did not help, and even rejoiced when Judah was destroyed by enemies.
- They even plundered, captured fugitives, and handed them over to the enemy.
“On the day you stood on the other side… and joined in the plundering… like one of them!” (verse 11)
🎯 Sin is not only evil deeds — it is also indifference when a brother suffers.
📌 3. The Day of the Lord Will Come (verses 15–16)
- The Lord declares that “the Day of the LORD” will come for all nations, not only Edom.
- Every deed will return upon the one who did it:
“As you have done, so it will be done to you.” (verse 15)
- The judgment of the Lord is just and complete.
🎯 No nation or individual can escape the judgment of the Lord.
📌 4. The Restoration of Israel and the Victory of the Lord (verses 17–21)
- Mount Zion will become a place of salvation, the home of the righteous people of God.
- The nations will belong to the Lord, and believers will be victorious.
- The book closes with a majestic line:
“Then the Lord will be King.” (verse 21)
🎯 In the end, the kingdom of God will stand — and all worldly power will bow.
