The man’s utterance:
I am weary, O God,
I am weary, and my strength is spent.

Surely I am more brutish than any man,
and I have no understanding of a human being.

I have not learned wisdom,
so that I do not know the Holy One.

Who has gone up to heaven and come down?
Who has gathered the wind in his fists?
Who has wrapped up the waters in a garment?
Who has established all the ends of the earth?
What is his name, and what is his son’s name?
Surely you know!

Every word of God is pure.
He is a shield to those who take refuge in him.

Do not add to his words,
lest he rebuke you and you be found a liar.

Two things I ask of you;
do not refuse me before I die, namely:

Keep falsehood and lies far from me.
Do not give me poverty or riches.
Feed me with the food that is my portion,

lest I be full and deny you,
and say, “Who is the LORD?”
or lest I be poor and steal,
and profane the name of my God.

Do not slander a servant to his master,
lest he curse you, and you bear the guilt.

There is a generation that curses its father
and does not bless its mother.
12
There is a generation that is pure in its own eyes,
yet is not washed from its own filth.

There is a generation—how lofty are its eyes,
and its eyelids are lifted up!

There is a generation whose teeth are swords,
and whose jaw teeth are knives,
to devour the poor from the earth,
and the needy from among mankind.

The leech has two daughters: “Give! Give!”
There are three things that are never satisfied,
four that never say, “Enough!”

Sheol, the barren womb,
the earth that is never satisfied with water,
and the fire that never says, “Enough!”

The eye that mocks a father,
and scorns obedience to a mother,
will be pecked out by the ravens of the valley,
and eaten by the young eagles.

There are three things that are too wonderful for me,
yes, four that I do not understand:

the way of an eagle in the sky,
the way of a serpent on a rock,
the way of a ship on the high seas,
and the way of a man with a young woman.

This is the way of an adulterous woman:
she eats, then wipes her mouth,
and says, “I have done no wrong.”

Under three things the earth trembles,
yes, under four it cannot bear up:

under a servant when he becomes king,
under a fool when he is filled with food,

because of a woman who is not loved, when she gets a husband,
and because of a maidservant, when she takes the place of her mistress.

There are four things that are smallest on the earth,
but they are exceedingly wise:

the ants, a people not strong,
yet they provide their food in the summer,
26
the rock badgers, a people not mighty,
yet they make their house in the clefts of the rock,
27
the locusts, which have no king,
yet all of them march in order,
28
the lizard that you can catch with the hand,
yet it is also found in kings’ palaces.

There are three things that are stately in their stride,
indeed, four that are stately in their walk, namely:

the lion, strongest among beasts,
which does not turn back before anything.

a proud rooster, or a male goat,
and a king when he goes before his people.

If you exalt yourself without or with thought,

For when milk is pressed, butter is produced,
