At the beginning, serving often feels sweet. Over time, schedules increase, expectations rise, comments come, and joy diminishes. We begin to ask, “Why am I doing all this?” The restoring answer always returns to the source: serving because of love, not because of obligation. “We love because He first loved us” (1 John 4:19). Love is the fuel for service, not a whip that forces.
Paul wrote, “The love of Christ controls us” (2 Corinthians 5:14). Not guilt, not pride, not fear of judgment. When love becomes the center, service changes from a burden into a response. Jesus invites, “Come to Me, all who are weary and burdened… for My yoke is easy and My burden is light” (Matthew 11:28-30). There is a burden, but that burden is light when carried with Him, not alone.
By the lakeside, Jesus did not ask Peter, “Are you strong enough to lead,” but rather, “Do you love Me?” (John 21:15-17).
Love first, then mandate. For pastors, the warning is clear: “Shepherd the flock of God that is among you, exercising oversight, not under compulsion, but willingly, as God would have you; not for shameful gain, but eagerly” (1 Peter 5:2-3). Service motivated by love remains gentle even amid a busy pace, whereas service driven by demands quickly becomes dry and easily harsh.
“Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men” (Colossians 3:23). The center of service is not results or applause, but the pleasure of God. Therefore, the measure of success shifts: not how much we accomplish, but how obediently we walk. “For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another” (Galatians 5:13). Here, service is not a tool to prove oneself, but a way to channel the love already received.
How to restore the joy of service when the heart feels burdened?
- Return to the source, not the schedule. Take a brief moment to sit before the Lord, not just to rearrange your agenda. Slowly read 1 John 4:19, and repeat this sentence in prayer: “I serve because You first loved me.”
- Examine your motivation honestly. Ask yourself whether you are seeking praise, avoiding rejection, or responding to Christ’s love. If your motivation is off track, admit it and ask God to realign it. “If we confess our sins…” (1 John 1:9).
- Choose a healthy portion. Love does not mean always saying yes. Jesus also rested and withdrew (Mark 6:31; Luke 5:16). Setting limits to continue loving sincerely is obedience, not laziness.
- Do the small part with a full heart. Focus on one person you can serve tangibly today. Love becomes concrete through small, consistent steps.
- Serve together, not alone. Share the burden, ask for help, and give space for the body of Christ to function.
- When hands support each other, the heart finds it easier to be grateful.
- Measure by fruit, not applause. Ask yourself whether my service produces the fruit of the Spirit such as patience and gentleness (Galatians 5:22-23). Fruit is a sign of the Spirit’s work, not just busy activity.
Am I serving to be loved or because I am already loved? This question helps to realign direction whenever the heart begins to feel heavy. When you serve out of obligation, you will easily be disappointed if not appreciated. When you serve out of love, you remain steady even without recognition, because what you seek is the Father’s smile, not human applause.
In the end, the highest form of service is not impressive performance, but faithful obedience. Christ does not look for the busiest team; He looks for hearts that cling, learn humility, and are faithful in small matters. From such hearts flows the strength to endure, the creativity to help, and the gentleness to restore.
Father, realign our hearts with Your love. Restore the joy of serving, straighten our motivations, and teach us to choose a healthy portion.
Let every step of our service be a response of love, not a burden of demands, so that Your name may be glorified through our lives. Amen.
