Should a Wife Fully Submit to Her Husband?

This question is often a hot topic in Christian marriage discussions. Many people quote the verse in Ephesians 5:22, โ€œWives, submit to your husbands as to the Lord.โ€ But is it really true that a wife must submit completely in everything, without thought, even if it conflicts with the truth of Godโ€™s Word? Letโ€™s take a closer look at what the Bible actually teaches.

1. Submission Does Not Mean Less Worth

Often the word โ€œsubmitโ€ is understood as a form of inequality. Yet the Bible teaches that men and women were created equally in the image and likeness of God (Genesis 1:27). A womanโ€™s value before God is no less than a manโ€™s.

The submission spoken of in Ephesians 5 is not oppression, but a willing attitude of placing oneself within the order God has established so that the family may function well.

2. Submit โ€œAs to the Lordโ€

This phrase is very important. A wife is asked to submit to her husband not blindly, but โ€œas to the Lord.โ€ That means submission as long as it aligns with the truth of the Lordโ€™s Word. If a husband leads in a direction that goes against the faith, then the wife is not obligated to follow. Obedience to God remains higher than obedience to man (Acts 5:29).

3. Husbands Are Called to Love, Not Dominate

Often the verse about a wife submitting is quoted without continuing to the next verse. Yet Ephesians 5:25 says, โ€œHusbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave Himself up for her.โ€

A husband is not a dictator, but a loving leader. Christ leads through sacrifice, not coercion. So a wife submits not out of fear, but in response to sincere love.

4. Submission and Love Are a Two-Way Relationship

Ephesians 5:21 comes before all those commands with, โ€œSubmit to one another out of reverence for Christ.โ€ So submission is not only the wifeโ€™s duty; husbands are also called to humble themselves for the sake of their wives. A Christian relationship is mutual respect, not sacrifice from only one side.

5. The Limits of Submission

Submission does not mean a wife may never express her opinion, correct her husband, or remind him of something. In fact, Proverbs 31 describes a wise wife who works, manages the household, and even becomes a valuable counselor.

In other words, submission does not mean losing your voice or identity. Submission means honoring the husbandโ€™s role as head of the family while still living in Godโ€™s truth and wisdom.

Conclusion

So, should a wife fully submit to her husband? The answer is: yes, in the context of love, respect, and obedience to God. However, that submission is not an unlimited surrender, but one that remains within the boundaries of Godโ€™s Word.

A wife is called to submit, and a husband is called to love. If both walk together according to the pattern of Christ and the church, then the home will become a place where Godโ€™s love is made visible.

Colossians 3:18-19 beautifully sums it up: โ€œWives, submit yourselves to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord. Husbands, love your wives and do not be harsh with them.โ€
