Reality shows, films, concerts, and digital entertainment content are now a big part of our lives. Many people watch to unwind, find inspiration, or simply keep up with trends. However, some also ask: should Christians reject reality shows and worldly entertainment because they are considered “worldly”?
1. Entertainment Is Not the Problem, But…
The Bible never directly forbids entertainment. In fact, God created joy and laughter (Ecclesiastes 3:4 says there is a time to weep and a time to laugh). The problem is not the entertainment itself, but what values are contained in it and how our hearts respond to it.
2. The Reality of “the World” in the Bible
When the Bible warns about “the world,” it does not mean the earth or entertainment in a broad sense, but rather the world system that opposes God (1 John 2:15-17). So if entertainment leads us toward sin, such as hidden pornography, normalizing violence, or fostering envy and materialism, we must be careful.
3. Principles for Evaluating Entertainment
Paul gives a practical principle: “All things are lawful for me, but not all things are helpful. All things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any” (1 Corinthians 6:12).
That means:
- Does this entertainment build up my faith or weaken it?
- Can I watch it without being enslaved (addicted)?
- Does this entertainment make me more like Christ or pull me away?
4. Reality Shows: Entertainment or Poison?
Reality shows often have two sides:
- Positive: they can provide motivation (cooking competitions, talent shows, survival shows), show human creativity, and even become an inspiration.
- Negative: they can be full of drama, gossip, emotional manipulation, and lead viewers into a judgmental or envious attitude.
As believers, we are challenged to discern, not simply reject everything or follow along blindly.
5. How Can We Respond in a Healthy Way?
- Have a spiritual filter: Ask, “Is God pleased with me watching this?”
- Guard your heart: Do not let entertainment replace time for prayer, worship, or the Word.
- Use it for light: If there is entertainment that can become a bridge for conversation with friends, use that opportunity to be a witness for Christ.

Christians do not automatically have to reject all reality shows or worldly entertainment. What matters is how we evaluate, filter, and use them. Entertainment is fine, as long as it does not enslave us, does not draw us away from God, and still helps us live as the light of the world.
Remember: it is not the entertainment that is sinful, but when our hearts love entertainment more than God.
