Using Social Media to Glorify God

Social media has become an inseparable part of our lives. Every day, billions of people open apps to share stories, seek information, or simply for entertainment. However, as believers, an important question we need to reflect on is: how can we use social media to glorify God, not just for ourselves?

Social Media: Neutral, Depends on the User

The Bible does not specifically mention “social media,” but the principles regarding the use of words and influence are clearly addressed. Proverbs 18:21 says, “Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruits.”
In today’s context, what we type on social media is the same as what we say in the real world.

Social media is not inherently evil or holy by itself, but rather a tool. What makes it bring blessing or harm is how we use it.

Biblical Principles in Using Social Media

  1. Be honest in every post.
Ephesians 4:25 advises, “Therefore, putting away falsehood, let each one of you speak the truth with his neighbor, for we are members one of another.” Do not share fake news just because it looks interesting.
  2. Use it to build up, not to tear down.
Ephesians 4:29 reminds us, “Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up…” Likewise, our posts should inspire, not spread hatred.
  3. Guard your heart against pride.
It is very easy to use social media to seek recognition. But Jesus reminds us in Matthew 6:1 not to do good deeds just to be seen by others.
  4. Are we posting for the glory of God or to seek human praise?

  5. Make it a means of testimony.
Social media can be used to share verses, devotionals, prayers, or real-life stories that encourage.

It does not mean that every post must contain spiritual content, but whatever we share should reflect the love and truth of Christ.

Practical Examples of Using Social Media for God

  • Sharing Bible verses that are relevant to daily life.
  • Writing personal faith experiences that can encourage others.
  • Giving loving responses in comments, even when opinions differ.
  • Using the platform to pray for or support others.
  • Filtering the content we consume so as not to fall into temptation.

Challenges to Be Aware Of

  1. Addiction to attention (likes, views, followers). This can trap our hearts in seeking human validation.
  2. Negative content that erodes faith. We need to be careful not to let social media control our thinking more than the Word of God.
  3. Comparing ourselves to others. Galatians 6:4 reminds us, โ€œEach one should test their own actions. Then they can take pride in themselves alone, without comparing themselves to someone else.โ€

Conclusion

Social media can be a great blessing if used wisely.

The key is the motivation of our hearts. Are we posting, commenting, and interacting to glorify God or merely for personal interests?

May we learn to make social media not just a means of entertainment, but also a place where the light of Christ shines. In this way, the digital world can also become a genuine field of ministry.
