This question often arises in a world increasingly accustomed to divorce as a solution for “unhappy” marriages. But what is God’s actual view on divorce according to the Bible? Does God always hate divorce, or are there certain conditions where it is permitted?
Let’s look at this honestly, biblically, and with love.
1. God Hates Divorce, But Does Not Hate the Person Who Divorces
In Malachi 2:16, God says, “I hate divorce,” because it tears apart the bond that He Himself joined. God designed marriage as a holy and lifelong covenant (Genesis 2:24). So yes, God hates divorce not out of hatred for the person, but because of the pain, destruction, and disorder it causes within families, children, and society.
2. There Are Situations Permitted by Jesus
Although God does not desire divorce, Jesus gives an exception in Matthew 19:9:
“Whoever divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another, commits adultery.”
This means that adultery can be a reason divorce is permitted, though it is still not the choice God intended from the beginning. This shows that God is realistic about human weakness, yet still prioritizes restoration and forgiveness whenever possible.
3. The Apostle Paul Adds Another Exception
In 1 Corinthians 7:15, Paul says that if an unbelieving spouse leaves the believing spouse, then the believer is no longer bound. This is often called “freedom because of abandonment.”
But it is important to note: permission does not mean command. Divorce is still not the goal. What God longs for is reconciliation, not breaking the bond.
4. God’s Grace Is Greater Than Our Past
If you have ever been divorced and feel like a failure, remember: God is a God who restores. He does not reject you because of your past. Even if your divorce happened because of wrong decisions, the door of grace remains open.
Psalm 34:19 says, “The LORD is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”

God desires faithful marriages that love each other until the end of life, but He also knows that living in this broken world is full of challenges. God remains compassionate toward those who have failed and seek His forgiveness.
