The word “fear” is often associated with a desire to avoid, flee, or even a trembling terror. So, when the Bible says that we must “fear the Lord,” many people immediately think: Is God frightening?
However, the concept of “fear of the Lord” in the Bible is actually much deeper and more beautiful than we imagine. It is not about a fear like being afraid of the dark or snakes, but about a heart attitude that respects, worships, and lives in awareness of God’s presence and glory.
1. Fear That Brings Understanding
Proverbs teaches that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of all knowledge:
“The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction.” (Proverbs 1:7)
This means that the true fear of the Lord is actually the gateway to understanding life. Fear of the Lord does not make us run away, but leads us to true wisdom.
2. Fear That Is Full of Respect, Not Terror
In Hebrew, the word “yirah” translated as “fear” can also mean a deep sense of awe. Just as someone can be silent when looking at the beauty of the stars in the sky or standing at the edge of a very deep cliff, fear of the Lord is the awareness of His extraordinary greatness and how small we are before Him.
“Blessed are all who fear the LORD, who walk in obedience to him!” (Psalm 128:1)
Fear here does not mean distancing oneself, but drawing near with submission, respect, and love.
3. Fear That Shapes Life
Fear of the Lord is not just a feeling in the heart, but is real in the way a person lives. A person who fears the Lord does not merely avoid sin out of fear of punishment, but because he does not want to hurt the heart of the God he loves.
“For Christ’s love compels us…” (2 Corinthians 5:14)
When we truly respect and love the Lord, we do not dare to live carelessly. We value holiness, truth, and His will in every daily decision.
4. The Fruit of the Fear of the Lord
The fear of the Lord does not make life anxious. In fact, the Bible says that the fear of the Lord brings blessings:
“The fear of the LORD is a fountain of life, turning a person away from the snares of death.” (Proverbs 14:27)
“The LORD confides in those who fear him…” (Psalm 25:14)
This means that those who fear the Lord will be given deep closeness with Him. Not distance, but intimacy.
Conclusion: Fear That Brings Peace
So, the fear of the Lord is not a fear that makes us draw away, but a respect and awe that makes us want to draw closer to Him. This is the kind of fear that actually brings peace, clarity, and a life aligned with God’s will.
“My son, if you accept my words… then you will understand the fear of the LORD and gain knowledge of God.” (Proverbs 2:1-5)
Not all fear is bad. When we learn to fear the Lord, it is there that we find true life.
