Imagine if Jesus did not truly rise physically. Only symbolically, only spiritually, only just a feeling of the disciples. What would be the impact?
This question is not mere speculation. It touches the very foundation of the Christian faith. Jesus’ resurrection is not just an “Easter bonus story,” but the heart of the Gospel itself.
Without Physical Resurrection, Faith Is in Vain
The Apostle Paul is very clear on this matter.
“But if Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is useless and so is your faith” (1 Corinthians 15:14)
For Paul, and the entire Christian faith, Jesus’ resurrection is proof that death has been defeated, sin has been redeemed, and the promise of eternal life is not nonsense.
Without a real and physical resurrection, the cross is just a tragedy. The disciples are merely victims of illusion. And our faith is just empty hope.
Jesus’ Body Was Truly Empty
Many people try to interpret the resurrection only spiritually. But the Bible leaves no room for that.
“Look at my hands and my feet. It is I myself! Touch me and see; a ghost does not have flesh and bones, as you see I have” (Luke 24:39)
Jesus even ate in front of the disciples (Luke 24:42-43), and allowed Thomas to touch His wounds (John 20:27). This is not a vision. This is real. Physical.
If the resurrection is only symbolic, how can we believe that our bodies will also be raised like His?
Eternal Hope Stands on Eternal Fact
Jesus said:
“I am the resurrection and the life; whoever believes in me will live, even though they die” (John 11:25)
But this promise depends on the fact that He Himself has conquered death.
If Jesus did not truly rise, then He is not God. He is just a good teacher who died miserably. And we have no reason to hope for life after death.
Yet, because He truly rose, we can confidently say:
“O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?” (1 Corinthians 15:55)
So, What Does It Mean for Us?
The physical resurrection of Jesus affirms that our bodies are not in vain. That this world will not simply be wiped away. That the Christian faith is not just personal spirituality, but a promise of total restoration. Soul and body. Heaven and earth.
If Jesus did not rise physically, then we live without a foundation. But because He rose, we can face today with the confidence that suffering is not the end of the story.
