One of life’s greatest challenges is when we choose to do what is right, yet we are misunderstood. We want to be faithful to the Word, but others see it differently. Situations like this can leave us tired, angry, and even wanting to give up. But God’s Word teaches that being misunderstood is not a reason to step back from the truth.
Jesus Himself is the greatest example in this. He was often misunderstood, even rejected by the very people who should have understood the Messiah best. John 1:11 says, “He came to His own, and His own did not receive Him.” Imagine that—Jesus, full of love, was misunderstood and rejected. Yet He remained steadfast in doing the Father’s will.
The story of Joseph in the Old Testament also reminds us of this. He was sold by his brothers because they misunderstood his dreams (Genesis 37:19-20). Even so, Joseph remained faithful and did not leave God. In the end, it was through all that misunderstanding and suffering that God used Joseph to save many people (Genesis 50:20).
When facing misunderstanding, there are several things we need to remember:
- Focus on God’s view, not human view. The apostle Paul wrote in Galatians 1:10, “Am I now seeking the approval of man, or of God? Or am I trying to please man? If I were still trying to please man, I would not be a servant of Christ.” If our goal is to please everyone, we will quickly waver. But if our focus is to please the Lord, we will stand firm.
- Stay humble; do not respond with bitterness. Misunderstanding can trigger anger. However, Romans 12:17 says, “Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everyone.” When we choose humility, we show the character of Christ.
- Trust that God is working behind the misunderstanding. Sometimes misunderstanding opens the way for God to glorify His name. Just like Joseph, what first looked bad, God can turn into good.
It is not easy to stand in the truth when everyone misunderstands. Yet remember that we are not alone. Jesus experienced it first, and the Holy Spirit is always with us. What matters most is remaining faithful, because in the end, the truth will prove itself. Psalm 37:6 says, “He will bring forth your righteousness as the light, and your justice as the noonday.”
Lord, when I am misunderstood because I choose Your way, give me a heart that remains calm and faithful. Teach me to see with Your eyes and not through human judgment. Let me stand firm in Your truth until everyone sees Your love and power made real. Amen.
