Have you ever felt that your body is already tired, your eyes are almost closing, but your fingers are still busy scrolling social media or watching videos nonstop? Interestingly, our bodies give signals to rest, but the brain seems to refuse to stop. This phenomenon does not only happen to young people, but to almost everyone in the digital era. The question is, what is actually happening to our bodies when they are tired, and what about our spirit in that condition?
The Science Behind Physical Fatigue
Scientifically, fatigue appears when the brain and muscles run out of energy. The bodyโs cells need ATP (Adenosin TriPhosphate) as fuel. When we do not get enough sleep, the nervous system does not get a chance to “reset,” so the body feels heavy, the muscles become stiff, and concentration decreases.
However, the human brain has a unique trait: it can “trick” us out of feeling tired with dopamine, a chemical released when we use gadgets, watch something, or receive notifications. That is why, even though the body wants to rest, we can still stay awake longer than we should.
This phenomenon is called โsleep procrastinationโ in the world of psychology. We delay sleep because we want a little extra enjoyment, even though we know tomorrow the result will be fatigue, difficulty focusing, and even declining health.
Spiritual Lessons from Physical Fatigue
The Bible also reminds us that human beings are not only body, but also spirit. Paul wrote, โThe spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weakโ (Mark 14:38). When the body is tired, our spirit can also be disturbed. Just as the body needs sleep to recover, our spirit also needs โspiritual restโ through prayer, the Word, and the presence of the Lord.
We may stay online even when the body is almost collapsing, but the question is: is our spirit still “online” with God? Or has it already disconnected?
Psalm 62:1 says, โTruly my soul finds rest in God; my salvation comes from him.โ In other words, true peace does not come from digital entertainment, but from a relationship with God.
Keeping Spiritual Warmth
If the body can become exhausted from overuse, then our spirit can grow cold because of too little of the Word and prayer. Just as the body needs quality sleep, the spirit also needs special time to recharge. Here are some simple steps we can take:
- Set a sleep schedule โ learn discipline by stopping gadget use at a certain hour.
- Build a short prayer routine before bed, even if it is only for a few minutes.
- Be filled with the Word โ this does not mean a long passage; one verse meditated on deeply is enough.
- Realize that body and spirit are connected. A healthy body helps the spirit become more sensitive, and a strong spirit helps us control the body.
Isaiah 40:31 encourages us, โBut those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles.โ
Conclusion
Physical fatigue is a natural signal for us to rest, but do not forget that our spirit can also grow weary if it is continually filled with the worldโs distractions. The body may stay online, but our spirit must remain connected to God. Only with a balance between physical and spiritual rest can we live healthily and be pleasing to Him.
