We live in an instant era. Food can be ordered via phone, information is just searched on the internet, and quick answers have become a culture. So it’s no wonder that waiting feels like suffering. Especially when what we are waiting for is God’s promise, a change in situation, or an answer to prayers we have been murmuring for years.
But it is precisely in the season of waiting that God is most active in shaping our hearts. Waiting is not a wasted time. It is the place where faith is tested and obedience is strengthened.
God Often Delays, But Never Neglects
One of the most striking figures about waiting is Abraham. God promised him a child at a very old age. But he had to wait 25 years to see Isaac born. Romans 4:20-21 records, “Yet he did not waver through unbelief regarding the promise of God, but was strengthened in his faith and gave glory to God, being fully persuaded that God had power to do what he had promised.”
Waiting does not mean God forgets. Sometimes the answer is delayed because God wants our hearts to be ready when the promise is fulfilled.
Waiting Is Part of God’s Plan
Ecclesiastes 3:1 says, “There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens.” This reminds us that not everything has to happen when we want it. There is a time to plant, a time to harvest. There is a time to sow tears, and a time to reap joy.
Jesus Himself waited thirty years before beginning His public ministry. Even He, the Son of God, submitted to the process of time appointed by the Father.
What Can We Do When God Tells Us to Wait?
- Abide in His presence. Psalm 37:7 says, “Be still before the LORD and wait patiently for him.” Being still is not passive, but actively waiting with faith.
- Fill the waiting time with obedience. Luke 16:10 teaches that whoever is faithful in little things will be trusted with greater things. Use the waiting time to be faithful in simple matters.
- Avoid shortcuts. Like Abraham who was tempted through Hagar, shortcuts often bring long-lasting consequences. Trust that God’s way is always better.
- Pray, not just complain. Philippians 4:6 says, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.”
- Believe that character is more important than speed. God cares more about who we become, not just what we achieve.
Closing: Waiting Shapes a Deep Faith
God is never in a hurry, and He is never late. When He tells us to wait, it is not because He is cruel, but because He is full of love. He knows your timing, He knows the readiness of your heart, and He knows the end of the story.
John 13:7 records Jesus’ words to Peter, “What I am doing you do not understand now, but afterward you will understand.” So if right now you do not understand why you must wait, keep trusting. Because later you will see that your season of waiting was actually a season of extraordinary growth.
