That morning, the women came to Jesus’ tomb with hearts full of sorrow. They wanted to pay their final respects with spices. But what they found was not Jesus’ body, but an empty tomb. The angel said, “Why do you seek the living among the dead?” (Luke 24:5). That question was not only for them, but also for us today.
Often we fall into the same habit: seeking life in things that are actually temporary. We hope true happiness will come from wealth, position, or human recognition. Yet none of these can give eternal life. The living Jesus is the only source of true hope.
The resurrection of Jesus is the center of the Christian faith. Paul wrote, “But the fact is that Christ has been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep” (1 Corinthians 15:20). This resurrection is not only Jesus’ victory, but also our assurance. If Jesus lives, then we too have hope for eternal life.
However, the angel’s question also challenges us to examine ourselves. Are we still looking for Jesus in the wrong place? Some people know Jesus only as a historical figure, a moral teacher, or someone worthy of admiration. But Jesus is not merely a figure from the past. He is the living Lord who is present in our daily lives.
Christ’s resurrection means we are no longer bound by the past. We do not have to remain trapped in the tomb of guilt, hatred, or despair. Romans 6:4 says, “We were therefore buried with Him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.”
This means our lives should reflect that resurrection. Not a gloomy and hopeless life, but a life filled with joy, hope, and love. Do not keep seeking true life in things that are already dead, but find it in Jesus who has risen.
The angel’s question at the empty tomb still echoes today: “Why do you seek the living among the dead?” The answer is simple: we do not need to look for Him in the wrong place, because He lives and is with us every day.
Lord Jesus, thank You because You have risen and are alive. Forgive me if I often seek hope in temporary things. Help me to keep my eyes on You, the source of true life. Teach me to walk in the power of Your resurrection. Amen.
