If you have ever compared different Bible versions or read the footnotes at the bottom of the page, you may have found something interesting in Luke 9:55-56. In some translations, this verse is quite short, but in some ancient texts, there are additional words of Jesus that do not appear in many modern Bibles. Why is there a difference? Does this mean a verse was removed?
This is not about manipulating the Bible or reducing God’s revelation. In fact, this is part of the very careful and responsible process of preserving the biblical text by manuscript scholars. Let us look at it honestly and in love.
1. What Is the Additional Content in Luke 9:55-56?
In the context of Luke 9:52-56, Jesus and His disciples were rejected by the Samaritans. Then James and John asked permission to call down fire from heaven to destroy them. But Jesus rebuked them.
In modern versions such as the Indonesian Bible Society New Translation or NIV, this verse reads:
“But He turned and rebuked them. Then they went to another village.”
However, in certain Greek text manuscripts or older versions such as the King James Version, there is an addition:
“You do not know what manner of spirit you are of. For the Son of Man did not come to destroy men’s lives but to save them.”
This addition is what is often questioned. Why is it in some versions, but not in all?
2. About Textual Differences: Which Is Original?
Our Bible today comes from a very long process of manuscript preservation. There are thousands of Greek manuscripts of the New Testament, from the 2nd century to the Middle Ages. The older a manuscript is, the closer it is usually considered to be to the original.
The added sentence in Luke 9:55-56 appears in later manuscripts, while the older manuscripts, which are considered more reliable, do not contain that part. Textual critics conclude that the added sentence was most likely an explanatory addition by scribes who wanted to provide context or quote Jesus’ teaching from another passage.
For example, the sentence “The Son of Man did not come to destroy, but to save” is similar to John 3:17. Most likely, the scribes added clarification with good intentions, not to deceive.
3. Does This Reduce the Truth of the Bible?
Not at all. In fact, this process shows how transparent and honest modern Bible translators and researchers are. Additions not found in the earliest manuscripts are removed from the main text and often placed in footnotes so readers know there is a textual variant.
In addition, the main message does not change. Whether the verse is included or not, Jesus’ attitude remains clear: He rejected the violence suggested by His disciples. This is consistent with His teaching throughout Scripture, such as in Matthew 5:39 about loving enemies and not repaying evil with evil.
4. How Should We Respond to This as Christians?
First, do not panic or feel that our faith is threatened. In fact, by understanding the history of this text, we can appreciate the accuracy and integrity of the Bible even more.
Second, we can be more careful in reading the Word. Every difference or small note can lead us into a deeper understanding of God’s character, and encourage us to examine His Word with open hearts, like the Bereans (Acts 17:11).
Third, do not use this difference as a tool for argument, but for building mature understanding. The Bible does not change in its essence just because one sentence is not included. The truth of the Gospel remains intact, and Jesus remains the loving Savior.

We believe that God is able to keep His Word pure amid all human limitations. Small differences in texts like Luke 9:55-56 actually show that we have a transparent Bible, not one that is hidden.
Our faith is not in the shape of the letters alone, but in the Person who reveals that truth, Jesus Christ, the living Word. So do not be afraid of textual differences, but use them as an opportunity to know Him more deeply.
