The angel who had been speaking with me returned and awakened me, as one is awakened from sleep.

Then he said to me, “What do you see?” And I answered, “I see: there is a lampstand, all of gold, with a bowl on its top; it has seven lamps, and seven spouts on each of the lamps that are on its top.

And two olive trees are beside it, one on the right of the bowl and one on its left.”

Then I spoke and said to the angel who was speaking with me, “What do these things mean, my lord?”

So the angel who was speaking with me answered and said to me, “Do you not know what these things mean?” And I said, “No, my lord!”

Then he answered and said to me, “This is the word of the LORD to Zerubbabel, saying: Not by might, nor by power, but by My Spirit, says the LORD of hosts.
7
Who are you, O great mountain? Before Zerubbabel you shall become level ground. He shall bring out the capstone, while the people shout: ‘Grace! Grace to it!’”

Then the word of the LORD came to me, saying:

“‘The hands of Zerubbabel have laid the foundation of this House, and his hands shall also finish it. Then you will know that the LORD of hosts has sent me to you.
10
For who has despised the day of small things? They shall rejoice when they see the chosen stone in the hand of Zerubbabel.
These seven are the eyes of the LORD, which range through all the earth.’”

Then I spoke to him, saying, “What are these two olive trees on the right and on the left of this lampstand?”

And a second time I spoke to him, saying, “What are the two olive branches beside the two golden pipes, from which the golden oil flows?”

He answered me, “Do you not know what these things mean?” And I said, “No, my lord!”
14
Then he said, “These are the two anointed ones who stand beside the Lord of all the earth!”
💡⛰️🕊️ Summary of Zechariah 4 – The Golden Lampstand, the Holy Spirit, and Zerubbabel the Leader
Zechariah 4 continues the earlier prophetic vision. This time, the Lord shows a great golden lampstand with seven lamps and two olive trees — symbols of divine light and anointing. The heart of the message is well known and strengthening:
“Not by might and not by power, but by My Spirit.”
The Lord declares that the success of Zerubbabel’s building of the temple is not due to human ability, but to the power of the Holy Spirit.
📌 1. The Vision of the Golden Lampstand and the Two Olive Trees (verses 1–5)
“I saw… a lampstand of gold, with a bowl on top of it, seven lamps…”
- Golden lampstand = symbol of light and God’s presence
- Oil flowing directly from the two olive trees to the lampstand
- The angel stirs Zechariah: “Do you not know what these things mean?”
🎯 The Lord wants Zechariah (and us) to realize: spiritual light comes only from divine anointing — not from human effort.
📌 2. Not by Might, but by the Spirit of the Lord (verses 6–7)
“Not by might and not by power, but by My Spirit…”
The Lord spoke to Zerubbabel, the leader of the temple building:
- The great mountain (obstacle) will become level ground
- Zerubbabel will lay the first stone and the capstone
“People will shout: ‘Good! Good!’”
🎯 The Lord gives assurance: the work begun in faith will be completed by His help.

“Who despises the day of small things?”
Zerubbabel had already begun the building, and the Lord assures:
- He will finish it
- The eyes of the Lord will watch with joy
🎯 Sometimes God’s great work begins with small and simple steps — but in His eyes, they are precious.
📌 4. The Two Olive Trees = Two Anointed Ones (verses 11–14)
“These are the two anointed ones who stand beside the Lord of all the earth.”
Historically, these two olive trees point to:
- Joshua (the high priest)
- Zerubbabel (the civil leader)
Spiritually, this points to the priestly and kingly roles — which are ultimately fulfilled perfectly in Jesus Christ.

“He who began a good work among you will bring it to completion.”
→ As with the promise to Zerubbabel — the work will be finished.
“These are the two olive trees and the two lampstands…”
→ Pointing back to Zechariah 4, the two witnesses of God at the end of the age.
“I am the light of the world…”
→ The lamp points to Jesus as the true Light.
We are a royal priesthood — a people who reflect the light of God.
