These are the men who came to David at Ziklag, while he was still in hiding because of Saul son of Kish. They were among the mighty men who helped him in battle.

They were armed with bows, and were able to sling stones and shoot arrows from the bow with either the right hand or the left. They were from Saul’s kinsmen, from the Benjamites:

Abiezer the chief, and Joash, the sons of Shemaah the Gibeathite; Jeziel and Pelet, the sons of Azmaveth; Beracah and Jehu the Anathothite;

Ishmaiah the Gibeonite, a mighty man among the thirty, and leader over the thirty; Jeremiah, Jahaziel, Johanan, and Jozabad, the men of Gederah;

Eluzai, Jerimoth, Bealiah, Shemariah, and Shephatiah, the Haruphites;

Elkanah, Isshiah, Azarel, Joezer, and Jashobeam, the Korahites;

Joelah and Zebadiah, the sons of Jeroham, from Gedor.

Some of the Gadites also separated themselves and came over to David at the stronghold in the wilderness, mighty men of valor, men trained for war, skilled with shield and spear, whose faces were like lions and who were as swift as gazelles on the mountains.

Ezer the chief, Obadiah the second, Eliab the third;

Mishmannah the fourth; Jeremiah the fifth;

Attai the sixth; Eliel the seventh;

Johanan the eighth; Elzabad the ninth;

Jeremiah the tenth; Machbannai the eleventh.

These were from the sons of Gad, captains of the army; the least of them could stand against a hundred, and the greatest against a thousand.

These are the ones who crossed the Jordan in the first month, though it had overflowed all its banks, and they put to flight all the inhabitants of the valleys to the east and to the west.

Some of the sons of Benjamin and Judah came to David at the stronghold,

and David went out to meet them. He said to them, “If you have come to me in peace to help me, my heart shall be joined to you; but if you have come to betray me to my enemies, though there is no wrong in my hands, may the God of our fathers see it and judge you.”

Then the Spirit came upon Amasai, chief of the thirty:
We are yours, O David,
and on your side, O son of Jesse!
Peace, peace to you,
and peace to your helpers,
for your God helps you!
Then David received them and made them captains of the troops.

Some from Manasseh also defected to David when he went with the Philistines to battle against Saul. But he did not help them, for after consultation the lords of the Philistines sent him away, saying, “At the cost of our heads, he may defect to his master Saul.”

On the way to Ziklag, some of the tribe of Manasseh—Adnah, Jozabad, Jediael, Michael, Jozabad, Elihu, and Zilthai, leaders of the thousands of Manasseh—crossed over to his side.

These helped David against the raiding bands, for they were all mighty warriors and commanders in the army.

Day by day men came to David to help him, until they became a great army, like the army of God.

This is the number of the armed men for war who came to David at Hebron to transfer the kingship of Saul to David, according to the word of the LORD.

The men of Judah who bore shield and spear were six thousand eight hundred, ready for war.

From the sons of Simeon, mighty warriors for war, there were seven thousand one hundred.

From the sons of Levi there were four thousand six hundred,
27
with Jehoiada, leader of the house of Aaron, and with him three thousand seven hundred;
28
and Zadok, a young mighty warrior, with twenty-two leaders from his clan.

From the sons of Benjamin, Saul’s kinsmen, there were three thousand; until that time most of them had remained loyal to the house of Saul.

From the sons of Ephraim there were twenty thousand eight hundred mighty warriors, men of renown among their clans.

From the half-tribe of Manasseh there were eighteen thousand, designated by name to come and make David king.

From the sons of Issachar, men who understood the times, so that they knew what Israel ought to do: two hundred chiefs, and all their brothers under their command.

From Zebulun, men able for war, skilled in battle with every kind of weapon: fifty thousand, ready to help with undivided heart.

From Naphtali, one thousand commanders, and with them thirty-seven thousand bearing shield and spear.

From the Danites, men ready for war: twenty-eight thousand six hundred.
36
From Asher, men able and skilled for war: forty thousand.

From across the Jordan, from the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the other half-tribe of Manasseh, men bearing every kind of weapon of war: one hundred twenty thousand.

All these, warriors in battle array, came to Hebron with a whole heart to make David king over all Israel; and indeed all the rest of Israel were of one mind to make David king.

They stayed there with David for three days, eating and drinking, for their brothers had provided food for them.

Also those who were near them, even from Issachar, Zebulun, and Naphtali, brought food on donkeys, camels, mules, and oxen: provisions of flour, cakes of figs, raisin cakes, wine, oil, cattle, and sheep in great abundance, for there was joy in Israel.
