David consulted with the commanders of thousands and of hundreds, and with every leader.

David said to all the assembly of Israel, “If it seems good to you, and if it is from the LORD our God, let us send word to our brothers who remain in all the regions of Israel, and also to the priests and Levites in the cities with their pasturelands, that they may gather to us.

And let us bring back the ark of our God to us, for in the days of Saul we did not seek it.”

Then all the assembly said that they would do so, for the matter seemed right in the eyes of all the people.

So David gathered all Israel, from the Shihor River in Egypt to the entrance of Hamath, to bring the ark of God from Kiriath-jearim.

Then David and all Israel went up to Baalah, to Kiriath-jearim, which belonged to Judah, to bring up from there the ark of God, which is called by the name of the LORD who sits enthroned above the cherubim.

They carried the ark of God on a new cart from the house of Abinadab, and Uzzah and Ahio were guiding the cart.

David and all Israel were dancing before God with all their might, with songs, lyres, harps, tambourines, cymbals, and trumpets.

When they came to the threshing floor of Chidon, Uzzah reached out his hand to take hold of the ark, because the oxen stumbled.

Then the anger of the LORD burned against Uzzah, and He struck him down because he had put out his hand to the ark; and he died there before God.

David was angry because the LORD had broken out against Uzzah; and that place is called Perez-uzzah to this day.

David was afraid of God that day, and he said, “How can I bring the ark of God to me?”

So David did not move the ark to his place, to the city of David, but turned aside and took it to the house of Obed-edom the Gittite.
14
The ark of God remained with the family of Obed-edom in his house for three months, and the LORD blessed the family of Obed-edom and all that he had.
