After this Nahash, king of the Ammonites, died, and his son became king in his place.

Then David said, “I will show kindness to Hanun the son of Nahash, because his father showed kindness to me.” So David sent messengers to comfort him concerning his father’s death. But when David’s servants came to the land of the Ammonites, to Hanun, to comfort him,

the princes of the Ammonites said to Hanun, “Do you think David is honoring your father because he has sent comforters to you? Have not his servants come to you for the purpose of searching, spying out, and overthrowing the land?”

So Hanun took David’s servants and shaved them, and cut off their garments in the middle at the hips, and sent them away.

When they went, it was told to David concerning the men, and he sent men to meet them, for the men were greatly humiliated. The king said, “Stay at Jericho until your beards have grown, and then return.”

When the Ammonites saw that they had made themselves odious to David, Hanun and the Ammonites sent a thousand talents of silver to hire chariots and horsemen from Aram-naharaim, from Aram-maacah, and from Aram-zobah.

They hired thirty-two thousand chariots, and the king of Maacah with his troops, who came and camped near Medeba. The Ammonites also gathered from their cities and came out for battle.

When David heard of it, he sent Joab out with all the army and the mighty men.

Then the Ammonites came out and drew up their battle line at the entrance of the city gate, while the kings who had come were by themselves in the open country.

When Joab saw that the battle was set against him in front and behind, he chose some of the best men of Israel and drew them up against the Arameans.

The rest of the people he placed under the command of Abishai his brother, and they drew up their line against the Ammonites.

Then Joab said, “If the Arameans are too strong for me, then you shall help me; but if the Ammonites are too strong for you, then I will help you.

Be strong, and let us show ourselves strong for our people and for the cities of our God. May the LORD do what is good in his sight.”

Then Joab and the people with him advanced to meet the Arameans for battle, and they fled before him.

When the sons of Ammon saw that the Arameans had fled, they also fled before Abishai, Joab’s brother, and went into the city. After that Joab returned to Jerusalem.

When the Arameans saw that they had been defeated by Israel, they sent messengers and brought out the Arameans who were beyond the Euphrates River to come to battle under the command of Shophach, the commander of Hadadezer’s army.

When this was reported to David, he gathered all Israel, crossed the Jordan, and came near them, and drew up his battle line against them. When David drew up his battle line facing the Arameans for battle, they fought against him,

but the Arameans fled before Israel, and David killed of the Arameans seven thousand chariot horses and forty thousand foot soldiers; and Shophach, the commander of the army, he also killed.

When those who were subject to Hadadezer saw that they had been defeated by Israel, they made peace with David and submitted to him; after that the Arameans were no longer willing to help the sons of Ammon.
