The sons of Reuben, the firstborn of Israel. He was the firstborn, but because he had defiled his father’s bed, his birthright was given to the sons of Joseph, son of Israel also, though he is not recorded in the genealogy as the firstborn.

For Judah prevailed over his brothers, and from him came one who became ruler, but the birthright belonged to Joseph.

and Bela son of Azaz, son of Shema, son of Joel; he lived in Aroer and its territory as far as Nebo and Baal-Meon.

And eastward his territory extended to the edge of the wilderness that stretches from the Euphrates River, because their livestock had multiplied in the land of Gilead.

In the days of Saul they made war against the Hagrites; and when these fell into their hands, they lived in their tents throughout the eastern side of Gilead.

The sons of Gad lived opposite them in the land of Bashan as far as Salecah.

Joel was the chief, and Shapham the second; also Janai and Shaphat were in Bashan.

Their brothers by their fathers’ houses were Michael, Meshullam, Sheba, Jorai, Jakan, Zia, and Eber—seven in all.

These were the sons of Abihail son of Huri, son of Jaroah, son of Gilead, son of Michael, son of Jeshishai, son of Jahdo, son of Buz.

Ahi son of Abdiel, son of Guni, was a chief of their fathers’ houses.

They lived in Gilead, in Bashan, and in its towns, and throughout all the pasturelands of Sharon, to their farthest borders.

All these were enrolled in the genealogies in the days of Jotham king of Judah and in the days of Jeroboam king of Israel.

The sons of Reuben, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh had forty-four thousand seven hundred sixty men able to go to war, men who were brave, who could bear shield and sword and bend the bow, trained for battle.

They made war against the Hagrites, Jetur, Naphish, and Nodab.
20
They were helped against them, so that the Hagrites and all who were with them were given into their hand, because they cried out to God in the battle. And He granted their request, because they trusted in Him.

They carried away the livestock of those people as spoil: fifty thousand camels, two hundred fifty thousand sheep, and two thousand donkeys, and also one hundred thousand persons.
22
Many fell slain, because the battle was from God. And they occupied the land of those people until the time of the exile.

The half-tribe of Manasseh lived in the land from Bashan to Baal-hermon, Senir, and Mount Hermon. They were many in number.
24
These were the heads of their fathers’ houses: Epher, Ishi, Eliel, Azriel, Jeremiah, Hodaviah, and Jahdiel, mighty men of valor, men of renown, heads of their fathers’ houses.

But when they were unfaithful to the God of their fathers and played the harlot after the gods of the peoples of the land, whom God had destroyed before them,

the God of Israel stirred up the spirit of Pul, that is, Tiglath-pileser king of Assyria, and he carried them away into exile: the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh. He brought them to Halah, Habor, Hara, and the river of Gozan; and they are there to this day.
