In the eighteenth year of King Jeroboam son of Nebat, Abijam became king over Judah.
2
He reigned in Jerusalem three years. His mother’s name was Maacah, the daughter of Abishalom.
3
Abijam walked in all the sins that his father had committed before him, and his heart was not wholly devoted to the LORD his God, as David his forefather had been.
4
Nevertheless, for David’s sake the LORD his God gave him a lamp in Jerusalem by raising up his son after him and by preserving Jerusalem,

because David had done what was right in the sight of the LORD and had not turned aside from anything that He commanded him all the days of his life, except in the matter of Uriah the Hittite.

And there was war between Rehoboam and Jeroboam all the days of his life.

Now the rest of the acts of Abijam, and all that he did, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah? And there was war between Abijam and Jeroboam.

Then Abijam rested with his fathers, and he was buried in the city of David. And Asa his son reigned in his place.

In the twentieth year of Jeroboam king of Israel, Asa became king over Judah.

He reigned in Jerusalem forty-one years. His grandmother’s name was Maacah, the daughter of Abishalom.

Asa did what was right in the sight of the LORD, as David his forefather had done.
12
He removed the male shrine prostitutes from the land and took away all the idols that his fathers had made.
13
He also removed Maacah his grandmother from being queen mother, because she had made an abominable Asherah image. Asa cut down the abominable image and burned it in the Kidron Valley.
14
But the high places were not removed; nevertheless Asa’s heart was wholly devoted to the LORD all his days.
15
He brought into the house of the LORD the sacred gifts of his father and his own sacred gifts, silver and gold and other articles.
16
And there was war between Asa and Baasha king of Israel all their days.
17
Baasha king of Israel went up against Judah and fortified Ramah, intending to prevent traffic to Asa king of Judah.
18
Then Asa took all the silver and gold that remained in the treasuries of the house of the LORD and in the treasuries of the king’s house and gave them into the hands of his servants. King Asa then sent them to Ben-hadad son of Tabrimmon, son of Hezion, king of Aram, who lived in Damascus, with this message:

“There is a covenant between me and you, between my father and your father. Here I send you a gift of silver and gold. Come, break your covenant with Baasha king of Israel, so that he may withdraw from me.”

Then Ben-hadad listened to King Asa; and he sent the commanders of his armies against the cities of Israel, and he defeated Ijon, Dan, Abel-beth-maacah, and all Kinnereth, together with all the land of Naphtali.

When Baasha heard of it, he stopped fortifying Ramah and remained in Tirzah.

But King Asa summoned all Judah; no one was exempt. They carried away the stones and timber that Baasha had used to fortify Ramah, and King Asa used them to fortify Geba of Benjamin and Mizpah.

Now the rest of all the acts of Asa, and all his might, and all that he did, and the cities that he fortified, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah? But in his old age he was diseased in his feet.
24
Then Asa rested with his fathers, and he was buried with his fathers in the city of David his forefather. And Jehoshaphat his son became king in his place.
25
Nadab the son of Jeroboam became king over Israel in the second year of Asa king of Judah, and he reigned over Israel two years.
26
He did what was evil in the sight of the LORD, and walked in the way of his father and in his sin by which he had caused Israel to sin.
27
And Baasha the son of Ahijah, of the house of Issachar, conspired against him. Baasha struck him down at Gibbethon, which belonged to the Philistines, while Nadab and all Israel were besieging Gibbethon.
28
Baasha killed him in the third year of Asa king of Judah, and reigned in his place.
29
As soon as he became king, he struck down all the house of Jeroboam; he left not one breathing thing alive of Jeroboam, until he had destroyed them all, according to the word of the LORD that he spoke by his servant Ahijah the Shilonite,
30
because of the sins that Jeroboam had committed, which he caused Israel to sin, and because of the provocation with which he provoked the LORD, the God of Israel, to anger.

Now the rest of the acts of Nadab, and all that he did, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel?

And there was war between Asa and Baasha king of Israel all their days.
33
In the third year of Asa king of Judah, Baasha the son of Ahijah became king over all Israel in Tirzah, and he reigned twenty-four years.
34
He did what was evil in the sight of the LORD, and walked in the way of Jeroboam and in his sin by which he had caused Israel to sin.

This chapter continues the story of the kings of Judah and Israel after the death of Rehoboam and Jeroboam, highlighting two different reigns: Abijam (who was evil) and Asa (who was righteous) in Judah, and Nadab and Baasha in Israel. 📌 2. Asa, the Righteous King of Judah (verses 9–24)
➡️ Asa reigned for 41 years — one of the longest-reigning kings
➡️ He did what was right in the sight of the LORD
➡️ He removed the shrine prostitutes, idols, and even deposed his grandmother Maacah as queen because she worshiped Asherah
➡️ Although the high places were not completely destroyed, Asa’s heart remained faithful
➡️ When conflict arose with Baasha of Israel, Asa took silver and gold from the house of the LORD and made an alliance with Ben-hadad, king of Aram (Syria)
➡️ Asa gained a political victory, but this compromise would become a problem later
🎯 Faithfulness to God must be consistent — worldly strategy can become a snare.
📌 3. Nadab and Baasha in Northern Israel (verses 25–34)
➡️ Nadab, son of Jeroboam, reigned only 2 years and did evil
➡️ Baasha killed Nadab and all the house of Jeroboam, fulfilling the prophecy of the prophet Ahijah
➡️ Yet Baasha himself also did evil, following the path of Jeroboam
🎯 The LORD can use an evil person to punish another evil person — but that does not mean that person is right in His sight.
