And after some time, the word of the LORD came to Elijah in the third year, saying, “Go, show yourself to Ahab, for I will send rain upon the face of the earth.”

So Elijah went to show himself to Ahab. Now the famine was severe in Samaria.

And Ahab had called Obadiah, who was over the household. Now Obadiah feared the LORD greatly.
4
For when Jezebel cut off the prophets of the LORD, Obadiah took a hundred prophets and hid them, fifty to a cave and fifty to a cave, and provided them with bread and water.

Ahab said to Obadiah, “Go through the land to all the springs of water and to all the streams; perhaps we may find grass, so that we may save the horses and mules, and not have to kill any of the animals.”

So they divided the land between them to explore it. Ahab went alone in one direction, and Obadiah went in another direction.

As Obadiah was on the way, Elijah met him. When he recognized him, he fell on his face and said, “Is it you, my lord Elijah?”
8
He answered him, “It is I. Go, tell your lord, ‘Elijah is here.'”

But Obadiah said, “What sin have I committed, that you would hand your servant over to Ahab, so that he would kill me?

As the LORD your God lives, there is no nation or kingdom where my lord has not sent to seek you. And when they said, ‘He is not here,’ he made that kingdom or nation swear that you could not be found there.
11
And now you say, ‘Go, tell your lord, “Elijah is here.”‘
12
Perhaps it will happen, when I have gone from you, that the Spirit of the LORD will carry you away to a place I do not know. And when I come to Ahab to tell him, and he does not find you, he will surely kill me, though your servant has feared the LORD from my youth.

Has it not been told to my lord what I did when Jezebel killed the prophets of the LORD, how I hid a hundred of the prophets of the LORD in caves, fifty to a cave, and provided them with bread and water?

And now you say, ‘Go, tell your lord, “Elijah is here!”‘ He will surely kill me.”
15
Elijah said, “As the LORD of hosts lives, before whom I stand, I will surely show myself to him today.”

So Obadiah went to meet Ahab and told him. Then Ahab went to meet Elijah.

Soon after Ahab saw Elijah, he said to him, “Is it you, you troubler of Israel?”
18
Elijah answered him, “I have not troubled Israel, but you and your father’s house have done so, because you have forsaken the commandments of the LORD and you have followed the Baals.
19
Now therefore, send and gather all Israel to Mount Carmel, and the four hundred and fifty prophets of Baal, and the four hundred prophets of Asherah, who eat at Jezebel’s table.”
20
So Ahab sent word throughout all Israel and gathered the prophets together at Mount Carmel.
21
Then Elijah came near to all the people and said, “How long will you go limping between two opinions? If the LORD is God, follow him; but if Baal, follow him.” But the people answered him not a word.
22
Then Elijah said to the people, “I, even I only, am left as a prophet of the LORD, but Baal’s prophets are four hundred and fifty men.
23
Let two bulls be given to us; let them choose one bull for themselves, cut it in pieces, and lay it on the wood, but put no fire to it. I will prepare the other bull and lay it on the wood, and I will put no fire to it.
24
Then you call on the name of your god, and I will call on the name of the LORD. The God who answers by fire, he is God!” And all the people answered and said, “It is well spoken.”

Then Elijah said to the prophets of Baal, “Choose one bull for yourselves and prepare it first, for you are many. Then call on the name of your god, but put no fire to it.”

So they took the bull that was given them, prepared it, and called on the name of Baal from morning until noon, saying, “O Baal, answer us!” But there was no voice, and no one answered. And they limped around the altar that they had made.

At noon Elijah mocked them, saying, “Cry aloud, for he is a god. Perhaps he is deep in thought, or he is busy, or he is on a journey; perhaps he is asleep and must be awakened.”

So they cried aloud and cut themselves with swords and spears, as was their custom, until blood gushed out upon them.
29
And when midday was past, they raved on until the time of the evening offering, but there was no voice, no one answered, and no one paid attention.
30
Then Elijah said to all the people, “Come near to me.” So all the people came near to him. And he repaired the altar of the LORD that had been thrown down.
31
Then Elijah took twelve stones, according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Jacob. — To Jacob the word of the LORD had come: “Your name shall be Israel.” —
32
With the stones he built an altar in the name of the LORD, and he made a trench around the altar, large enough to hold two seahs of seed.
33
He arranged the wood, cut the bull in pieces, and laid the pieces on the wood.
34
Then he said: “Fill four jars with water, and pour it on the burnt offering and on the wood!” And he said: “Do it a second time!” And they did it a second time. Then he said: “Do it a third time!” And they did it a third time,
35
so that the water ran all around the altar; even the trench was filled with water.
36
Then at the time of the evening offering, the prophet Elijah came near and said: “O LORD, God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, let it be known today that You are God in Israel, and that I am Your servant, and that I have done all these things at Your word.
37
Answer me, O LORD, answer me, so that this people may know that You, O LORD, are God, and that You are turning their hearts back again.”
38
Then the fire of the LORD fell and consumed the burnt offering, the wood, the stones, and the dust, and it even licked up the water that was in the trench.
39
When all the people saw it, they fell on their faces and said: “The LORD, He is God! The LORD, He is God!”
40
Elijah said to them: “Seize the prophets of Baal; let not one of them escape.” After they had been seized, Elijah brought them down to the brook Kishon and slew them there.
41
Then Elijah said to Ahab: “Go up, eat and drink, for there is the sound of a heavy rain.”
42
So Ahab went up to eat and drink. But Elijah went up to the top of Mount Carmel, and he bowed himself to the ground, with his face between his knees.
43
After that he said to his servant: “Go up now, look toward the sea.” So the servant went up, looked, and said: “There is nothing.” Elijah said: “Go again.” And this happened seven times.

At the seventh time the servant said: “Look, a little cloud, as small as a man’s hand, is rising out of the sea.” Then Elijah said: “Go, say to Ahab: Harness your chariot and go down, lest the rain stop you.”

In a moment the sky grew dark with storm clouds, and a heavy rain fell. Ahab mounted his chariot and went to Jezreel.

But the power of the LORD came upon Elijah. He girded up his loins and ran ahead of Ahab all the way to the road that goes to Jezreel.
