(24-2) When Saul returned from pursuing the Philistines, word was brought to him, saying, “Behold, David is in the wilderness of En-gedi.”

(24-3) Then Saul took three thousand chosen men out of all Israel and went to seek David and his men among the rocks of the wild goats.

(24-4) He came to the sheepfolds by the road. There was a cave there, and Saul went in to relieve himself. Now David and his men were sitting in the innermost part of the cave.

(24-5) Then David’s men said to him, “This is the day of which the LORD said to you, ‘Behold, I will deliver your enemy into your hand, and you may do to him as it seems good to you.’” Then David arose and secretly cut off the corner of Saul’s robe.

(24-6) Afterward David’s heart struck him, because he had cut off Saul’s corner.

(24-7) And he said to his men, “The LORD forbid that I should do this thing to my lord, the LORD’s anointed, to put out my hand against him; for he is the LORD’s anointed.”

(24-8) So David restrained his men with these words, and did not permit them to rise against Saul.
Meanwhile Saul rose up and left the cave and went on his way.

(24-9) Afterward David also arose and went out of the cave, and called after Saul, saying, “My lord the king!” And when Saul looked behind him, David bowed with his face to the earth and paid homage.

(24-10) David said to Saul, “Why do you listen to the words of men who say, ‘Behold, David seeks your harm’?

(24-11) Behold, this day your own eyes have seen that the LORD gave you into my hand in the cave, and some urged me to kill you; but I spared you, for I said, ‘I will not put out my hand against my lord, for he is the LORD’s anointed.’

(24-12) See now, my father, see the corner of your robe in my hand. For in that I cut off the corner of your robe and did not kill you, you may know and see that there is no evil or treachery in my hand, and that I have not sinned against you, though you hunt my life to take it.

(24-13) May the LORD judge between you and me; may the LORD avenge me on you, but my hand shall not be against you.

(24-14) As the old saying goes, ‘Out of the wicked comes wickedness.’ But my hand shall not be against you.

(24-15) Against whom has the king of Israel come out to battle? Whom are you pursuing? A dead dog! A single flea!

(24-16) Therefore may the LORD be judge, deciding between me and you; may he see it, plead my cause, and give me justice by delivering me from your hand.”

(24-17) When David had finished speaking these words to Saul, Saul said, “Is that your voice, my son David?” Then Saul lifted up his voice and wept.

(24-18) He said to David, “You are more righteous than I, for you have done good to me, while I have done evil to you.

(24-19) You have shown today how you have dealt well with me: though the LORD had delivered me into your hand, you did not kill me.

(24-20) If a man finds his enemy, would he let him go away safely? May the LORD repay you with good for what you have done to me this day.
20
(24-21) Therefore, behold, I know that you shall surely be king, and the kingdom of Israel shall be established in your hand.

(24-22) So now swear to me by the LORD that you will not cut off my descendants and will not blot out my name from my father’s house.”

(24-23) Then David swore to Saul. After that Saul went home, but David and his men went up to the stronghold.
