David was told, “Behold, the Philistines are fighting against Keilah and are plundering the threshing floors.”

Then David inquired of the LORD, “Shall I go and strike down these Philistines?” The LORD said to David, “Go, strike down the Philistines, and save Keilah.”
3
But David’s men said to him, “Behold, here in Judah we are afraid; how much more then if we go to Keilah against the ranks of the Philistines?”
4
Then David inquired of the LORD again, and the LORD answered him, saying, “Arise, go down to Keilah, for I will give the Philistines into your hand.”
5
So David and his men went to Keilah and fought against the Philistines, drove away their livestock, and inflicted a great defeat among them. Thus David saved the inhabitants of Keilah.

When Abiathar the son of Ahimelech fled to David at Keilah, he came down with the ephod in his hand.

And Saul was told that David had come to Keilah. Then Saul said, “God has given him into my hand, for by entering a city with gates and bars he has shut himself in.”

So Saul summoned all the people for war, to go down to Keilah and besiege David and his men.

When David learned that Saul was plotting evil against him, he said to the priest Abiathar, “Bring the ephod here.”

Then David said, “O LORD, God of Israel, your servant has surely heard that Saul seeks to come to Keilah to destroy the city because of me.
11
Will the men of Keilah surrender me into his hand? Will Saul come down, as your servant has heard? O LORD, God of Israel, please tell your servant.” And the LORD said, “He will come down.”
12
Then David said, “Will the men of Keilah surrender me and my men into the hand of Saul?” And the LORD said, “They will surrender you.”
13
Then David and his men, about six hundred in number, arose and departed from Keilah and went wherever they could go. When Saul was told that David had escaped from Keilah, he did not go out.

And David stayed in the wilderness, in strongholds. He remained in the hill country, in the wilderness of Ziph. And Saul sought him continually, but God did not give him into his hand.

David was afraid, because Saul had come out to take his life. While David was in the wilderness of Ziph at Horesh,

then Jonathan, Saul’s son, arose and went to David at Horesh. He strengthened David’s trust in God
17
and said to him, “Do not be afraid, for the hand of my father Saul shall not find you; you shall be king over Israel, and I shall be second to you. My father Saul also knows this.”
18
Then the two of them made a covenant before the LORD. And David stayed at Horesh, but Jonathan returned to his house.
19
But some of the Ziphites went up to Saul at Gibeah and said, “David is hiding among us in the strongholds of the hill country near Horesh, on the hill of Hachilah, south of the wilderness.
20
Now therefore, if it pleases my lord the king to come down, let him come; it will be our duty to hand him over into the king’s hand.”
21
Saul said, “May you be blessed by the LORD, for you have shown compassion to me.
22
Go now, make further sure, and find out where he is and who has seen him there; for it has been told me that he is very cunning.
23
Look carefully through all his hiding places. Then return to me with certain news, and I will go with you. Indeed, if he is in the land, I will search him out among all the thousands of Judah.”
24
Then they set out and went to Ziph ahead of Saul. David and his men were in the wilderness of Maon, in the plain south of the wilderness.
25
When Saul and his men went to seek David, word was brought to David, and he went down to the rock and stayed in the wilderness of Maon. Saul heard of it and pursued David in the wilderness of Maon;

Saul went on one side of the mountain, and David with his men on the other side of the mountain. David hurried to get away from Saul; but Saul and his men were closing in on David and his men to capture them,
27
when a messenger came to Saul, saying, “Hurry and come, for the Philistines have raided the land.”
28
So Saul stopped pursuing David and went to meet the Philistines. Therefore that place was called the Rock of Escape.

(24-1) David went up from there and stayed in the strongholds of the hill country of En-gedi.

1 Samuel 23 tells how David was continually hunted by Saul, yet the LORD remained with him. David saved the city of Keilah from its enemies, but then had to flee from that city because of betrayal. In the midst of his flight, Jonathan strengthened David, and God protected him in a remarkable way. This is a story of obedience, betrayal, loyalty, and divine protection.

📌 3. Saul Searches, God Hides (verses 14–18)
➡️ David kept moving from place to place
➡️ Saul searched every day, but the LORD did not hand him over
➡️ Jonathan came secretly and strengthened David in faith, saying that Saul would not prevail
➡️ They renewed their covenant of friendship
🎯 At the weakest moment, God sends righteous people to strengthen—such was Jonathan.

➡️ The Ziphites told Saul where David was in the wilderness
