After the ark of the LORD had been in the land of the Philistines seven months,

the Philistines called for the priests and the diviners, and said to them, “What shall we do with the ark of the LORD? Tell us how we should send it back to its place.”

Then they said, “If you send back the ark of the God of Israel, do not send it away empty, but you must surely return to Him a guilt offering; then you will be healed, and you will know why His hand has not turned away from you.”
4
Then they asked, “What is the guilt offering that we should return to Him?” They answered, “According to the number of the lords of the Philistines, five golden tumors and five golden mice, for the same plague has struck all of you and your lords.

So make images of your tumors and images of the mice that are destroying your land, and give honor to the God of Israel. Perhaps He will lighten His hand upon you, upon your gods, and upon your land.

Why do you harden your hearts, as the Egyptians and Pharaoh hardened their hearts? Did they not let the people go, when He dealt severely with them?
7
Now therefore take and prepare a new cart, and two milk cows on which no yoke has ever been placed, and yoke the cows to the cart, but take their calves back home, so that they may not follow them.
8
Then take the ark of the LORD and place it on the cart, and put the golden objects that you are returning to Him as a guilt offering in a box beside it. Then let it go.

Watch: if it goes up by the way to its own land, to Beth-shemesh, then it is He who has brought this great disaster upon us. But if not, then we will know that it was not His hand that struck us; it happened to us by chance.”

So the men did this. They took two milk cows and yoked them to the cart, but kept their calves at home.

They placed the ark of the LORD on the cart, and the box containing the golden mice and the images of their tumors.

The cows went straight along the road to Beth-shemesh; they kept to one highway, lowing as they went, and did not turn aside to the right or to the left, while the lords of the Philistines followed behind them as far as the border of Beth-shemesh.

Now the people of Beth-shemesh were reaping wheat in the valley. When they lifted up their eyes, they saw the ark, and they rejoiced to see it.

The cart came to the field of Joshua the Beth-shemite, and stopped there. There was a large stone there. They split the wood of the cart and offered the cows as a burnt offering to the LORD.

The Levites took down the ark of the LORD, together with the chest that was beside it, in which were the gold objects, and set it on the large stone. On that day the men of Beth-shemesh offered burnt offerings and sacrifices to the LORD.

When the five rulers of the Philistines saw this, they returned to Ekron that same day.

These are the gold tumors that the Philistines paid to the LORD as a guilt offering: one from Ashdod, one from Gaza, one from Ashkelon, one from Gath, one from Ekron;

and the gold mice, according to the number of all the cities of the Philistines belonging to the five rulers, both fortified cities and their surrounding villages. The large stone, on which they set the ark of the LORD in the field of Joshua the Beth-shemite, is a witness to this day.

And He struck down some of the men of Beth-shemesh, because they looked into the ark of the LORD; He struck down seventy men of the people. The people mourned, because the LORD had struck them with great severity.
20
And the men of Beth-shemesh said, “Who is able to stand before the LORD, this holy God? To whom shall He go up away from us?”
21
Then they sent messengers to the inhabitants of Kiriath-jearim with this message: “The Philistines have returned the ark of the LORD; come down and take it up to you.”
