In the eighteenth year of King Jeroboam, Abijah became king over Judah.
2
He reigned three years in Jerusalem. His mother’s name was Micaiah, the daughter of Uriel of Gibeah. And there was war between Abijah and Jeroboam.

Abijah began the battle with an army of mighty men of war, four hundred thousand chosen men; and Jeroboam drew up his battle line against him with eight hundred thousand chosen men, mighty men of valor.

Then Abijah stood on Mount Zemaraim, which is in the hill country of Ephraim, and said, “Hear me, Jeroboam and all Israel!

Do you not know that the LORD, the God of Israel, gave the kingship over Israel to David and his sons forever by a covenant of salt?

Yet Jeroboam the son of Nebat, the servant of Solomon the son of David, rose up and rebelled against his lord.
7
Worthless men, men of lawlessness, gathered to him and strengthened themselves against Rehoboam the son of Solomon, when he was young and fainthearted and could not withstand them.
8
And now you think that you can withstand the kingdom of the LORD, which is in the hand of the sons of David, because you are a great multitude and with you are the golden calves that Jeroboam made for you as gods.
9
Have you not driven out the priests of the LORD, the sons of Aaron, and the Levites, and made priests for yourselves like the peoples of the lands? Whoever comes to consecrate himself with a young bull and seven rams may become a priest of what are not gods.
10
But as for us, the LORD is our God, and we have not forsaken him. The sons of Aaron minister to the LORD as priests, and the Levites attend to their duties,

burning to the LORD every morning and every evening burnt offerings and fragrant incense, setting the bread of the Presence on the clean table, and arranging the golden lampstand with its lamps to be lit every evening; for we keep the charge of the LORD our God, but you have forsaken him.

Behold, God is with us at our head, and his priests are ready with the trumpets to sound the alarm against you. O sons of Israel, do not fight against the LORD, the God of your fathers, for you will not succeed!”

But Jeroboam sent an ambush force to go around behind them, so that his main army was in front of Judah and the ambush forces were behind them.
14
When Judah turned around, behold, they had to face battle from the front and from behind. They cried out to the LORD, while the priests blew the trumpets,

and the men of Judah raised the battle cry. As the men of Judah raised the battle cry, God defeated Jeroboam and all Israel before Abijah and Judah.

The men of Israel fled from before Judah, but God delivered them into the hand of Judah.
17
Abijah and his army inflicted a great defeat on them. Of the men of Israel, five hundred thousand chosen men were slain.
18
Thus the men of Israel were subdued at that time, while the men of Judah grew strong, because they relied on the LORD, the God of their fathers.
19
Abijah pursued Jeroboam and took from him certain cities: Bethel with its towns, Jeshanah with its towns, and Ephron with its towns.
20
Jeroboam never again recovered strength in the days of Abijah. The LORD struck him, and he died.

Abijah showed himself strong. He took fourteen wives and became the father of twenty-two sons and sixteen daughters.

2 Chronicles 13 records the great conflict between Judah and Israel when Abijah son of Rehoboam became king of Judah.
