Then Abijah rested with his fathers, and he was buried in the City of David. And Asa his son became king in his place. In his days the land was quiet for ten years.

Asa did what was good and right in the sight of the LORD his God.

He removed the foreign altars and the high places, broke down the sacred pillars, and cut down the Asherah poles.

He commanded Judah to seek the LORD, the God of their fathers, and to keep the law and the commandment.

He also removed the high places and the incense altars from all the cities of Judah. And the kingdom was at peace under his rule.

Because the land was quiet and no one was at war with him in those years, he was able to build fortified cities in Judah; the LORD had given him rest.

He said to Judah, “Let us build up these cities and surround them with walls, towers, gates, and bars. The land is still ours, because we have sought the LORD our God; we have sought Him, and He has given us rest on every side.” So they built and prospered.

Asa had an army from Judah of three hundred thousand men carrying large shields and spears, and from Benjamin two hundred eighty thousand men carrying small shields and drawing bows. All these were mighty men of valor.

Zerah the Ethiopian came out against them with an army of one million men and three hundred chariots, and he came as far as Mareshah.

Then Asa went out to meet him, and they drew up their battle lines in the Valley of Zephathah near Mareshah.

Then Asa cried out to the LORD his God: “LORD, there is no one besides You to help the weak against the strong. Help us, O LORD our God, for we rely on You, and in Your name we have come against this great multitude. O LORD, You are our God; do not let man prevail against You!”

And the LORD struck the Ethiopians before Asa and Judah, and the Ethiopians fled.

Then Asa and his army pursued them as far as Gerar. So many of the Ethiopians fell that none remained alive, for they were shattered before the LORD and His army. The men of Judah carried off a very great plunder.
14
They struck all the cities around Gerar, for the fear of the LORD had fallen on their inhabitants. They plundered all those cities, for there was much spoil in them.
15
The tents of the livestock owners also were taken by them, and they carried off many sheep and goats and camels as plunder, and then they returned to Jerusalem.

➡️ Asa strengthened the fortified cities, building walls, towers, gates, and bars

➡️ All this was done during a time of peace, because the Lord had granted rest

“It makes no difference to You, O Lord, to help the mighty or the powerless…”
