Then his son Jehoshaphat became king in his place, and as ruler over Israel he strengthened himself

by placing troops in all the fortified cities of Judah and garrisons in the land of Judah, and in the cities of Ephraim that Asa his father had captured.

The LORD was with Jehoshaphat, because he walked in the earlier ways of David his forefather and did not seek the Baals,

but sought the God of his father. He walked according to His commandments and did not act as Israel did.

Therefore the LORD established the kingdom under his rule. All Judah brought tribute to Jehoshaphat, so that he became rich and greatly honored.

His heart was steadfast in the ways of the LORD. He also removed from Judah the high places and the Asherah poles.

In the third year of his reign he sent some of his officials, namely Benhail, Obadiah, Zechariah, Nethanel, and Micaiah, to teach in the cities of Judah.

With them were also some Levites, namely Shemaiah, Nethaniah, Zebadiah, Asahel, Shemiramoth, Jonathan, Adonijah, Tobijah, and Tob-Adonijah, together with the priests Elishama and Jehoram.

They taught in Judah, carrying with them the Book of the Law of the LORD. They went through all the cities of Judah, teaching the people.

The fear of the LORD fell on all the kingdoms of the lands surrounding Judah, so that they did not dare to make war against Jehoshaphat.

Some of the Philistines brought Jehoshaphat gifts and silver as tribute. The Arabs also brought him flocks: seven thousand seven hundred rams and seven thousand seven hundred male goats.

Jehoshaphat grew stronger and stronger, until he became exceedingly mighty. In Judah he built fortresses and store cities.

He had many supplies in the cities of Judah.
His fighting men were in Jerusalem, all of them mighty warriors.

This was the list of them by their clans; the commanders of Judah were Adnah the commander, with three hundred thousand mighty warriors;

next to him Jehohanan the commander, with two hundred eighty thousand;
16
and next to him Amasiah son of Zikri, who had freely given himself to the LORD, with two hundred thousand mighty warriors.
17
And from Benjamin was Eliada, a mighty warrior, with two hundred thousand men armed with bow and shield.
18
Next to him was Jehozabad, with one hundred eighty thousand men equipped for war.
19
They were the ones who served the king, besides those whom the king had stationed in the fortified cities throughout all Judah.

2 Chronicles 17 introduces King Jehoshaphat, the son of Asa, who became king of Judah after his father died. Unlike the end of Asa’s life, Jehoshaphat began his reign with faithfulness to the Lord. - Building fortresses and supply cities
