Then Jehoshaphat rested with his fathers, and he was buried with his fathers in the City of David. And Jehoram his son became king in his place.

His brothers, the sons of Jehoshaphat, were: Azariah, Jehiel, Zechariah, Azariahu, Michael, and Shephatiah. All these were the sons of Jehoshaphat king of Israel.

Their father gave them many gifts of silver and gold and precious things, together with fortified cities in Judah. But he gave the kingdom to Jehoram, because he was the firstborn.

When Jehoram had taken over the kingdom of his father and had strengthened himself, he killed with the sword all his brothers, and also some of the princes of Israel.

Jehoram was thirty-two years old when he became king, and he reigned eight years in Jerusalem.

He walked in the ways of the kings of Israel, as the house of Ahab had done, for Ahab’s daughter was his wife. He did what was evil in the sight of the LORD.

Yet the LORD was not willing to destroy the house of David, because of the covenant that He had made with David, and as He had promised to give a lamp to him and to his sons forever.

In his days Edom revolted against the rule of Judah and set up a king over themselves.
9
So Jehoram went out with his commanders and all his chariots; and by night he rose up and broke through the ranks of the Edomites who had surrounded him, together with the commanders of the chariots.

Thus Edom revolted from Judah’s rule and has remained independent to this day. At that time Libnah also revolted from his rule, because he had forsaken the LORD, the God of his fathers.

Moreover, he made high places in the mountains of Judah. He led the inhabitants of Jerusalem into unfaithfulness, and he led Judah astray.

Then a letter came to him from the prophet Elijah, saying: “Thus says the LORD, the God of David your father: Because you have not walked in the ways of Jehoshaphat your father, or in the ways of Asa, king of Judah,

but have walked in the way of the kings of Israel, and have led Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem into unfaithfulness, as the house of Ahab did, and also because you have killed your brothers, your own father’s house, who were better than you,
14
behold, the LORD will bring a great plague on your people, your children, your wives, and on all your possessions.
15
And you yourself will suffer a severe disease, a disease of the bowels, until after some time your bowels come out because of the disease.”
16
Then the LORD stirred up the spirit of the Philistines and of the Arabs who lived near the Ethiopians against Joram.
17
So they came up against Judah, invaded it, and carried away all the possessions found in the king’s palace as plunder, and also his sons and his wives, so that no son was left to him except Jehoahaz, his youngest son.
18
After all this the LORD struck him with an incurable disease of the bowels.
19
After some time, about two years later, his bowels came out because of his disease, and he died in great suffering. His people did not make a fire for him, as they had done for his fathers.
20
He was thirty-two years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem eight years. He died unloved, and they buried him in the City of David, but not in the tombs of the kings.
