Then the inhabitants of Jerusalem made Ahaziah, his youngest son, king in his place, because all his older sons had been killed by the band that came with the Arabians to the camp. So Ahaziah, son of Jehoram king of Judah, became king.

Ahaziah was forty-two years old when he became king, and he reigned one year in Jerusalem. His mother’s name was Athaliah, the granddaughter of Omri.

He also walked in the ways of the house of Ahab, for his mother counseled him to do wickedly.

He did what was evil in the sight of the LORD, like the house of Ahab, for after his father’s death they became his counselors, to his ruin.

By their counsel he also went with Jehoram son of Ahab, king of Israel, to make war against Hazael king of Aram at Ramoth-gilead. But the Arameans wounded Jehoram.

Then he returned to Jezreel to be healed of the wounds he had received at Ramah when he fought against Hazael king of Aram. And Ahaziah son of Jehoram king of Judah went down to see Jehoram son of Ahab in Jezreel, because he was sick.

It was ordained by God that Ahaziah should meet his end when he visited Jehoram; so when Ahaziah came, he went out with Jehoram to meet Jehu son of Nimshi, whom the LORD had anointed to destroy the house of Ahab.

While Jehu was carrying out judgment on the house of Ahab, he found the princes of Judah and the sons of the brothers of Ahaziah, who were serving Ahaziah. He also killed them.

Then he searched for Ahaziah; and Ahaziah was captured while hiding in Samaria. He was brought to Jehu and killed, but they buried him, for they said, “He is the grandson of Jehoshaphat, who sought the LORD with all his heart.” And there was no one left in the house of Ahaziah able to rule.

When Athaliah, the mother of Ahaziah, saw that her son was dead, she arose and destroyed all the royal offspring of the house of Judah.

But Jehosheba, the king’s daughter, took Joash son of Ahaziah and stole him away from among the king’s sons who were about to be killed, and put him and his nurse in the bedroom. So Jehosheba, daughter of King Jehoram, wife of the priest Jehoiada — she was Ahaziah’s sister — hid him from Athaliah, so that he was not killed by her.

And Joash remained with them hidden in the house of God for six years, while Athaliah ruled over the land.
💥👑🩸 Summary of 2 Chronicles 22 – Ahaziah, Athaliah, and the Beginning of Turmoil in Judah
2 Chronicles 22 describes a very dark period in the history of Judah. After Jehoram’s death, his son Ahaziah came to the throne only to reign for one year and follow the evil ways of the house of Ahab. He was killed by Jehu, God’s instrument for judging the house of Ahab. Then his mother, Athaliah, seized the throne by force, killing all the royal descendants, except for one who was secretly saved. This became a time of great turmoil, but even through it all, God was still at work preserving the line of David.
