Hezekiah was twenty-five years old when he became king, and he reigned twenty-nine years in Jerusalem. His mother’s name was Abijah, the daughter of Zechariah.

He did what was right in the eyes of the LORD, just as David his forefather had done.

In the first year of his reign, in the first month, he opened the doors of the house of the LORD and repaired them.

He brought in the priests and the Levites and gathered them in the east courtyard.

He said to them, “Listen to me, Levites! Now consecrate yourselves, and consecrate the house of the LORD, the God of your fathers. Remove the uncleanness from the holy place!

For our fathers have been unfaithful. They did what was evil in the eyes of the LORD our God; they have forsaken Him, turned their faces away from the dwelling of the LORD, and turned their backs on Him.
7
They even shut the doors of the portico of the house of the LORD and put out all the lamps. They did not burn incense or present burnt offerings in the holy place to the God of Israel,

so the wrath of the LORD came upon Judah and Jerusalem. He made them an object of horror, astonishment, and mockery, as you can see with your own eyes.

Because of this our fathers fell by the sword, and our sons and daughters and our wives were taken captive.
10
Now it is in my heart to make a covenant with the LORD, the God of Israel, so that His burning anger may turn away from us.
11
My sons, do not be negligent now, for the LORD has chosen you to stand before Him, to serve Him, to minister before Him, and to burn offerings to Him.”
12
Then the Levites arose: from the sons of Kohath, Mahath son of Amasai and Joel son of Azariah; from the sons of Merari, Kish son of Abdi and Azariah son of Jehallelel; from the Gershonites, Joah son of Zimmah and Eden son of Joah;

from the sons of Elizaphan, Shimri and Jeiel; from the sons of Asaph, Zechariah and Mattaniah;
14
from the sons of Heman, Jehiel and Shimei; and from the sons of Jeduthun, Shemaiah and Uzziel.

They gathered their brothers and consecrated themselves. Then they came according to the king’s command, in keeping with the word of the LORD, to cleanse the house of the LORD.

The priests went into the inner part of the house of the LORD to cleanse it. All the uncleanness they found in the temple of the LORD they brought out to the courtyard of the house of the LORD; the Levites received it to carry it outside, to the Kidron Valley.
17
The work of consecration began on the first day of the first month. On the eighth day of the month they reached the portico of the house of the LORD, and they consecrated the house of the LORD for eight days. They finished on the sixteenth day of the first month.

Then they went in to King Hezekiah and said, “We have cleansed the whole house of the LORD, the altar of burnt offering with all its utensils, and the table of the bread of the Presence with all its utensils.
19
Moreover, all the utensils that King Ahaz had discarded in his unfaithfulness during his reign, we have prepared and consecrated. Now they are before the altar of the LORD!”

Then early in the morning King Hezekiah gathered the city officials and went up to the house of the LORD.
21
They brought seven bulls, seven rams, seven lambs, and seven male goats as a sin offering for the royal family, for the sanctuary, and for Judah. He commanded the sons of Aaron, that is, the priests, to offer them on the altar of the LORD.
22
So they slaughtered the bulls, and the priests received the blood and sprinkled it on the altar. Then they slaughtered the rams and sprinkled the blood on the altar. After that they slaughtered the lambs and sprinkled the blood on the altar.

Then they brought the male goats for the sin offering before the king and the assembly, and they laid their hands on them.
24
And the priests slaughtered them and presented their blood on the altar as a sin offering to make atonement for all Israel. For the king had commanded that the burnt offering and the sin offering be made for all Israel.
25
He stationed the Levites in the house of the LORD with cymbals, harps, and lyres, according to the command of David, Gad the king’s seer, and the prophet Nathan; for the command came from the LORD through His prophets.

So the Levites stood with the instruments of David, and the priests with the trumpets.
27
Then Hezekiah ordered the burnt offering to be offered on the altar. When the burnt offering began, the song of the LORD began also, and the trumpets sounded, accompanied by the instruments of David, king of Israel.
28
The whole assembly bowed down in worship while the song was sung and the trumpets sounded. All this continued until the burnt offering was finished.
29
When the burnt offering was completed, the king and all who were present with him bowed down and worshiped.
30
Then King Hezekiah and the officials ordered the Levites to sing praises to the LORD with the words of David and of Asaph the seer. So they sang praises with gladness, and they bowed down and worshiped.
31
Then Hezekiah spoke: “Now you have consecrated yourselves to the LORD. Come near and bring sacrifices and thank offerings to the house of the LORD!” So the assembly brought sacrifices and praise offerings; and all who were willing brought burnt offerings also.
32
The number of burnt offerings brought by the assembly was: seventy bulls, one hundred rams, and two hundred lambs. All these were for burnt offerings to the LORD.

The consecrated offerings were: six hundred bulls and three thousand sheep.
34
But the priests were too few, so they were not able to skin all the burnt offerings. Therefore their brothers, the Levites, helped them until the work was finished and until the priests had consecrated themselves. For the Levites were more earnest in consecrating themselves than the priests.
35
Moreover, there were many burnt offerings, together with the fat of the fellowship offerings and the drink offerings for the burnt offerings. So the service of the house of the LORD was established again.
36
Hezekiah and all the people rejoiced over what God had prepared for the people, because it had come about unexpectedly.

2 Chronicles 29 is the story of King Hezekiah, the son of Ahaz, who immediately acted to restore Judah’s relationship with the LORD from the first day of his reign.
