The people of the land took Joahaz the son of Josiah and made him king in Jerusalem in place of his father.

Joahaz was twenty-three years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem three months.

Then the king of Egypt removed him from ruling in Jerusalem and fined the land one hundred talents of silver and one talent of gold.

The king of Egypt then made Eliakim, Joahaz’s brother, king over Judah and Jerusalem, and changed his name to Jehoiakim. But his brother Joahaz was taken captive by Neco and brought to Egypt.

Jehoiakim was twenty-five years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem eleven years. He did what was evil in the sight of the LORD his God.

Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came up against him and bound him with bronze chains to take him to Babylon.

Nebuchadnezzar also carried off some of the vessels of the house of the LORD to Babylon and put them in his palace in Babylon.

Now the rest of the acts of Jehoiakim, all the abominations he committed, and what was found against him, behold, they are written in the book of the kings of Israel and Judah. Then Jehoiachin his son became king in his place.

Jehoiachin was eighteen years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem three months and ten days. He did what was evil in the sight of the LORD.

At the turn of the year King Nebuchadnezzar sent and brought him to Babylon, together with the precious vessels of the house of the LORD. And Zedekiah, the brother of Jehoiachin’s father, became king over Judah and Jerusalem.

Zedekiah was twenty-one years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem eleven years.

He did what was evil in the sight of the LORD his God, and did not humble himself before the prophet Jeremiah, who spoke the word of the LORD.

He also rebelled against King Nebuchadnezzar, who had made him swear by God. He stiffened his neck and hardened his heart and did not turn to the LORD, the God of Israel.

Moreover, all the leaders of the priests and the people were repeatedly unfaithful, following all the abominations of the nations. They defiled the house of the LORD, which he had consecrated in Jerusalem.

Yet the LORD, the God of their fathers, sent word to them again and again through his messengers, because he had compassion on his people and on his dwelling place.
16
But they mocked the messengers of God, despised his words, and scoffed at his prophets. Therefore the wrath of the LORD rose against his people, until there was no remedy.
17
The LORD stirred up the king of the Chaldeans against them. He killed their young men with the sword in the house of their sanctuary, and spared neither young man nor maiden, old man nor gray-haired man; all were given into his hand.
18
All the vessels of the house of God, great and small, and the treasures of the house of the LORD, the treasures of the king and of his princes, all these he carried to Babylon.
19
They burned the house of God, broke down the wall of Jerusalem, and burned all its palaces with fire, so that all its precious vessels were destroyed.
20
Those who remained and those who escaped from the sword he carried away to Babylon, and they became his servants and the servants of his sons until the kingdom of Persia came to power.
21
Thus the word of the LORD spoken by Jeremiah was fulfilled, until the land had enjoyed its sabbaths; for all the days of its desolation it kept sabbath, until seventy years were completed.
22
Now in the first year of Cyrus king of Persia, the LORD stirred up the spirit of Cyrus king of Persia, so that the word spoken by Jeremiah might be fulfilled; and he caused a proclamation to be made throughout all his kingdom, by word of mouth and in writing, saying:

“Thus says Cyrus king of Persia: All the kingdoms of the earth the LORD, the God of heaven, has given me. He has appointed me to build a house for him in Jerusalem, which is in Judah. Whoever among you belongs to his people, may the LORD his God be with him, and let him go up!”

2 Chronicles 36 is the closing chapter of Chronicles, summarizing the last four kings of Judah and the fall of Jerusalem into the hands of Babylon. This chapter reflects the accumulation of rebellion against God, rejection of His prophets, and the climax: judgment in the form of exile to Babylon. ➡️ Even the priests and leaders defiled the house of God and mocked the LORD’s prophets
➡️ The LORD kept sending His prophets in compassion, but they scoffed and mocked them
🎯 God’s patience is exceedingly great, but if it is continually rejected, His wrath cannot be avoided.
📌 3. The Destruction of Jerusalem and the Exile (verses 17–21)
➡️ So the Lord raised up Babylon, which came and:
- Killed the young, the old, and the children
- Burned the house of God, tore down the wall of Jerusalem, and burned the palaces
- Carried all who remained into exile in Babylon for 70 years
➡️ This was the fulfillment of Jeremiah’s prophecy, that the land would rest for 70 years

➡️ After 70 years, according to Jeremiah’s prophecy, Cyrus, king of Persia, was commissioned by the LORD

“Who among you is of all His people? May the LORD, his God, be with him, and let him go up.”
➡️ Cyrus allowed the people of Judah to return to Jerusalem to build the house of the LORD
