When Athaliah, the mother of Ahaziah, saw that her son was dead, she arose and destroyed all the royal offspring.

But Jehosheba, daughter of King Joram and sister of Ahaziah, took Joash son of Ahaziah and stole him away from among the king’s sons who were about to be killed. She put him and his nurse in a bedroom storehouse, and hid him from Athaliah, so that he was not put to death.

He remained with her hidden in the house of the LORD for six years, while Athaliah ruled over the land.

In the seventh year Jehoiada summoned the captains of hundreds of the Carites and of the guard. He had them come to him in the house of the LORD, and made a covenant with them, putting them under oath in the house of the LORD. Then he showed them the king’s son.

After that he commanded them, saying, “This is what you must do: one third of you, those who are on duty on the Sabbath here, but are guarding the king’s palace —

another third at the gate of Sur, and another third at the gate behind the guard — shall keep watch over the palace;
7
and the two divisions of you, all those who are on duty here on the Sabbath and are guarding the house of the LORD,
8
shall surround the king on every side, each with his weapon in his hand; and whoever comes within the ranks shall be put to death. Be with the king whenever he goes out or comes in.”

The captains of hundreds did exactly as the priest Jehoiada commanded. Each took his men who were ending their duty on the Sabbath, together with those who were coming on duty that day, and they came to the priest Jehoiada.

The priest gave to the captains of hundreds the spears and shields that had belonged to King David and were in the house of the LORD.

Then the guards, each with his weapon in his hand, took their places from the right side to the left side of the house, around the altar and the house, to protect the king.
12
Then Jehoiada brought out the king’s son, put the crown on him, and gave him the testimony. They made him king and anointed him, and they clapped their hands and cried out, “Long live the king!”

When Athaliah heard the noise of the guards and the people, she went to the people in the house of the LORD.
14
And she saw the king standing by the pillar according to the custom, with the captains and the trumpeters beside the king. And all the people of the land were rejoicing and blowing trumpets. Then Athaliah tore her clothes and cried out, “Treason! Treason!”

But Jehoiada the priest commanded the captains of hundreds, the officers over the army, and said to them, “Bring her out from among the ranks! Whoever sides with her, let him be put to death with the sword!” For the priest had said, “Let her not be killed in the house of the LORD.”

So they seized the woman. When she came to the king’s palace by way of the horse gate, there she was put to death.

Then Jehoiada made a covenant between the LORD and the king and the people, that they should be the people of the LORD; also between the king and the people.

After that all the people of the land went into the house of Baal and tore it down; they broke in pieces its altars and its images completely, and they killed Mattan the priest of Baal before the altars. Then the priest Jehoiada appointed guards for the house of the LORD.
19
After this he took the captains of hundreds, the Carites, the guards, and all the people of the land, and they brought the king down from the house of the LORD; they entered the king’s palace through the gate of the guards; and the king sat on the throne of the kingdom.
20
So all the people of the land rejoiced, and the city was quiet, after Athaliah had been put to death with the sword in the king’s palace.

Jehoash was seven years old when he became king.
