Ahab had seventy sons in Samaria. Jehu wrote letters and sent them to Samaria, to the rulers of the city, to the elders, and to the guardians of Ahab’s children, saying:

“Now, as soon as this letter comes to you, since your master’s sons are with you under your care, and you have chariots and horses, a fortified city, and weapons,

choose the best and most suitable of your master’s sons, set him on his father’s throne, and then fight for your master’s house.”
4
But they were very afraid and said, “If the two kings could not stand against him, how can we stand?”

So the palace administrator and the city governor, together with the elders and the guardians, sent word to Jehu, saying, “We are your servants, and we will do all that you say to us; we will not appoint anyone as king. Do what seems good in your sight.”

Then Jehu wrote them a second letter, saying, “If you are on my side and are willing to obey my words, take the heads of your master’s sons and come to me at this time tomorrow at Jezreel.” Now the seventy sons of the king were staying with the leading men of the city who were raising them.

When the letter came to them, they took the king’s sons, killed the seventy men, put their heads in baskets, and sent them all to Jehu at Jezreel.

When the messenger came and told him, “The heads of the king’s sons have been brought,” Jehu said, “Pile them in two heaps at the entrance of the gate until morning.”

In the morning Jehu went out and stood, and said to all the people, “You are innocent. It was I who conspired against my master and killed him; but who killed all these?
10
Know now that not one word of the LORD, which the LORD spoke concerning the house of Ahab, has failed; the LORD has done what he said through his servant Elijah.”
11
Then Jehu struck down all who remained of the house of Ahab in Jezreel, as well as all his great men, his close friends, and his priests; he left none of them alive.

Then Jehu set out and went to Samaria. On the way, near Beth-eked of the shepherds,

he met the relatives of Ahaziah, king of Judah, and he said to them, “Who are you?” They answered, “We are the relatives of Ahaziah, and we have come to greet the sons of the king and the sons of the queen mother.”
14
Then Jehu said, “Take them alive!” So they took them alive and slaughtered them at the well of Beth-eked, forty-two men; he left none of them alive.

When he had gone from there, he met Jehonadab the son of Rechab, who was coming to meet him. He greeted him and said, “Is your heart true to me, as my heart is toward you?” Jehonadab answered, “Yes.” “If so, give me your hand.” So he gave him his hand, and Jehu took him up beside him into the chariot.

Jehu said, “Come with me, and you will see my zeal for the LORD.” So he had him ride in his chariot.
17
When Jehu came to Samaria, he killed all who remained of the house of Ahab in Samaria; he destroyed them, according to the word that the LORD had spoken to Elijah.

Then Jehu gathered all the people and said to them, “Ahab served Baal a little, but Jehu will serve him much more.
19
Now therefore summon to me all the prophets of Baal, all who serve him, and all his priests; let none be missing, for I am going to offer a great sacrifice to Baal. Whoever is missing shall not live.” But Jehu did this by craft, in order to destroy those who served Baal.
20
Then Jehu said, “Proclaim a solemn assembly for Baal!” And they proclaimed it.
21
Jehu sent word throughout all Israel, and all who served Baal came, not one was left out. Then they entered the house of Baal, so that the house was filled from end to end.
22
Then Jehu said to the one in charge of the wardrobe, “Bring out garments for all who serve Baal!” So garments were brought out for them.
23
After this Jehu and Jehonadab the son of Rechab went into the house of Baal, and he said to the worshipers of Baal there, “Search and look carefully, so that there may be no servant of the LORD here among you, but only the worshipers of Baal.”

Then they went in to offer sacrifices and burnt offerings. Now Jehu had stationed eighty men outside and had said, “If any one of the men I place in your hands escapes, his life shall be for the life of that man.”
25
After Jehu had finished offering the burnt offering, he said to the guards and to the officers, “Go in, strike them down; let no one escape!” So they struck them down with the edge of the sword, and threw out the bodies; then the guards and the officers went into the house of Baal.

They brought out the pillar of the house of Baal and burned it.
27
They broke down the pillar of Baal, and broke down the house of Baal, and made it a latrine; and it is so to this day.
28
Thus Jehu destroyed Baal out of Israel.
29
Only, Jehu did not turn away from the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, by which he caused Israel to sin, that is, the sin of the worship of the golden calves that were in Bethel and in Dan.
30
The LORD said to Jehu, “Because you have done well in carrying out what is right in my eyes, and have done to the house of Ahab according to all that was in my heart, your sons shall sit on the throne of Israel to the fourth generation.”
31
But Jehu did not walk in the law of the LORD, the God of Israel, with all his heart; he did not turn away from the sins of Jeroboam by which he caused Israel to sin.

In those days the LORD began to cut off parts of Israel, for Hazael defeated them throughout the territory of Israel
33
east of the Jordan, taking all the land of Gilead, the land of the Gadites, the Reubenites, and the Manassites, from Aroer by the river Arnon, both Gilead and Bashan.

Now the rest of the acts of Jehu, and all that he did, and all his might, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel?

Then Jehu rested with his fathers, and they buried him in Samaria; and Jehoahaz his son reigned in his place.
36
The time that Jehu reigned over Israel in Samaria was twenty-eight years.
🩸👑🗡️ Summary of 2 Kings 10 – Jehu Destroys the House of Ahab and the Destruction of Baal Worship
2 Kings 10 continues the story of the divine judgment carried out by Jehu, the new king of Israel. After killing Joram and Jezebel, Jehu did not stop there. He carried out the LORD’s command by wiping out all the descendants of Ahab and removing Baal worship from Israel. Yet, though zealous in establishing justice, Jehu himself did not fully live faithfully to the LORD.
📌 1. Jehu Kills Ahab’s 70 Sons (verses 1–11)
➡️ Jehu sent letters to the leaders of Samaria who were caring for Ahab’s descendants
➡️ They feared Jehu and chose to surrender
➡️ At Jehu’s command, the 70 sons of Ahab were beheaded and their heads were sent to Jezreel
➡️ Jehu also killed the whole royal family, high officials, and Ahab’s friends
🎯 God’s justice can be total and leave no inheritance of sin.
📌 2. Jehu Kills the Brothers of Ahaziah (verses 12–14)
➡️ On the way to Samaria, Jehu met a company from the family of Ahaziah
➡️ He seized them and killed them at the well of Beth-eked
🎯 The evil alliance between Israel and Judah was also cleansed by the hand of the Lord.
📌 3. Jehu Meets Jehonadab and Strengthens His Mission (verses 15–17)
➡️ Jehu invited Jehonadab son of Rechab, a godly man, as a witness to his actions
➡️ Together, they entered Samaria and killed all who remained of the family of Ahab
🎯 Joining with a righteous man gives moral legitimacy, but it is no substitute for obedience of the heart.
📌 4. Jehu Destroys the Worship of Baal (verses 18–28)
➡️ Jehu pretended that he was about to hold a great feast for Baal
➡️ He gathered all the priests and worshipers of Baal in his temple
➡️ After that, Jehu ordered his men to kill them all
➡️ The image, altar, and temple of Baal were completely destroyed
🎯 False worship must be uprooted to the root so that the people may return to God.
📌 5. The Closing of Jehu’s Life (verses 29–36)
➡️ Though he destroyed Baal, Jehu did not turn Israel away from the sin of the golden calves at Bethel and Dan
➡️ The Lord gave Jehu a promise that four generations would sit on his throne
➡️ Yet Israel began to lose its territory to Hazael, king of Aram
🎯 Partial obedience is not enough — God desires full faithfulness.
📖 Main Teaching
- Obedience to the Lord must be total, not half-hearted.
Jehu was right in upholding justice and destroying Baal, but he failed to destroy the golden calves — another form of idolatry that was left standing. - The Lord is faithful to His promise, even to an imperfect leader.
Because Jehu carried out part of His will, the Lord still blessed him with descendants on the throne. - The judgment of God can be severe and thorough.
Systemic sin such as the worship of Baal and an evil dynasty must be torn down completely. - Spiritual victory does not guarantee lifelong faithfulness.
Though Jehu was initially zealous, in the end he did not live in full submission.
