When the time came for the LORD to take Elijah up to heaven in a whirlwind, Elijah and Elisha were walking from Gilgal.

Elijah said to Elisha, “Please stay here, for the LORD has sent me on to Bethel.” But Elisha said, “As the LORD lives, and as you yourself live, I will not leave you.” So they went down to Bethel.

Then the company of the prophets who were at Bethel came out to Elisha and said to him, “Do you know that today the LORD will take your master away from you, over you into heaven?” He answered, “Yes, I know; be silent!”

Elijah said to him, “Elisha, please stay here, for the LORD has sent me on to Jericho.” But he said, “As the LORD lives, and as you yourself live, I will not leave you.” So they came to Jericho.

Then the company of the prophets who were at Jericho approached Elisha and said to him, “Do you know that today the LORD will take your master away from you, over you into heaven?” He answered, “Yes, I know; be silent!”

Elijah said to him, “Please stay here, for the LORD has sent me on to the Jordan.” He answered, “As the LORD lives, and as you yourself live, I will not leave you.” So the two of them went on.

Fifty men from the company of the prophets went along, but they stood watching from a distance while the two of them stood by the Jordan.

Then Elijah took his cloak, rolled it up, and struck the water with it; and the water was divided to one side and to the other, so that the two of them crossed over on dry ground.

And when they had crossed over, Elijah said to Elisha, “Ask what I shall do for you before I am taken from you.” Elisha said, “Please let a double portion of your spirit be upon me.”

He said, “You have asked a hard thing. Yet if you see me when I am taken from you, it shall be so for you; but if not, it shall not be so.”

As they went on and talked, suddenly a chariot of fire and horses of fire separated the two of them, and Elijah went up to heaven in a whirlwind.

When Elisha saw it, he cried out, “My father, my father! The chariots of Israel and its horsemen!” And he saw him no more. Then he took hold of his own clothes and tore them into two pieces.

He picked up Elijah’s cloak that had fallen from him, and he went back and stood by the Jordan.

He took up the mantle of Elijah that had fallen from him, struck the water with it, and cried out, “Where is the LORD, the God of Elijah?” He struck the water, and it was divided to this side and to that side, and Elisha crossed over.

When the company of the prophets who were at Jericho saw him from a distance, they said, “The spirit of Elijah rests on Elisha.” They came to meet him, and they bowed themselves to the ground before him.

They said, “Look now, there are with your servants fifty strong men. Let them go and seek your master, lest the Spirit of the LORD has taken him up and cast him upon some mountain or into some valley.” But Elisha said, “Do not send them.”
17
But when they pressed him until he was ashamed, he said, “Send them.” So they sent fifty men. They searched for three days, but did not find Elijah.
18
When they came back to Elisha, who was still staying in Jericho, he said to them, “Did I not tell you, ‘Do not go’?”
19
The men of the city said to Elisha, “Please, look, the situation of this city is good, as my lord sees; but the water is bad, and the land causes miscarriages.”
20
He said, “Bring me a new bowl, and put salt in it.” So they brought it to him.
21
Then he went out to the spring of the water and threw the salt into it, and said, “Thus says the LORD: I have healed this water; from it there shall be no more death or miscarriage.”

So the water has been healed to this day, according to the word that Elisha spoke.
23
From there Elisha went up to Bethel. And as he was going up, some boys came out of the city and mocked him, saying to him, “Go up, baldhead! Go up, baldhead!”
24
Then he turned around, and when he saw them, he cursed them in the name of the LORD. And two bears came out of the woods and tore forty-two of the boys.
25
From there he went to Mount Carmel, and from there he returned to Samaria.
