Joram, the son of Ahab, became king over Israel in Samaria in the eighteenth year of Jehoshaphat king of Judah, and he reigned twelve years.

He did what was evil in the sight of the LORD, but not like his father and his mother; for he removed the pillar of Baal that his father had made.

Nevertheless, he clung to the sin of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, which caused Israel to sin; he did not turn away from it.
4
Mesha, king of Moab, was a sheep breeder; as tribute he paid to the king of Israel one hundred thousand lambs and the wool of one hundred thousand rams.

But as soon as Ahab died, the king of Moab rebelled against the king of Israel.

At that time King Joram went out from Samaria and mustered all Israel.

Then he sent word to Jehoshaphat king of Judah, saying, “The king of Moab has rebelled against me! Will you go with me to fight against Moab?” He answered, “I will go. I am as you are, my people as your people, my horses as your horses.”
8
Then he asked, “By which way shall we go up?” He answered, “By way of the wilderness of Edom.”

So the king of Israel, the king of Judah, and the king of Edom went. But after they had gone around for seven days’ journey, there was no water for the army or for the animals that followed them.
10
Then the king of Israel said, “Alas! The LORD has called these three kings together to give them into the hand of Moab!”
11
But Jehoshaphat said, “Is there not here a prophet of the LORD, that we may inquire of the LORD through him?” Then one of the king of Israel’s servants answered and said, “Elisha the son of Shaphat is here, who used to serve Elijah.”

Jehoshaphat said, “The word of the LORD is with him.” Then the king of Israel, Jehoshaphat, and the king of Edom went down to Elisha.
13
But Elisha said to the king of Israel, “What have I to do with you? Go to the prophets of your father and to the prophets of your mother.” The king of Israel answered him, “No, for the LORD has called these three kings together to give them into the hand of Moab!”

Elisha said, “As the LORD of hosts lives, before whom I stand, if it were not that I regard Jehoshaphat king of Judah, I would not look at you or see you.

But now bring me a musician.” And when the musician played, the hand of the LORD came upon him.
16
Then he said, “Thus says the LORD: Make this valley full of trenches,
17
for thus says the LORD: You shall not see wind or rain, yet this valley shall be filled with water, so that you, your livestock, and your pack animals may drink.
18
This is a light thing in the sight of the LORD; He will also give the Moabites into your hand.
19
You shall strike down every fortified city and every choice city; you shall fell every good tree; you shall stop up all springs of water and ruin every good field with stones.”
20
The next day, when the offering was made, water came suddenly from the direction of Edom, and the land was filled with water.
21
When all the Moabites heard that the three kings had come up to fight against them, all who were able to bear a sword were summoned, even the older men, and they were stationed at the border.
22
The next morning, when the sun shone on the water, the Moabites saw that the water opposite them was red like blood.
23
Then they cried out, “It is blood! Surely the kings have fought one another and struck each other down. Now then, to the spoil, Moab!”
24
But when they came to the camp of Israel, the Israelites rose up and struck the Moabites, so that they fled from before them. And they pressed farther into Moab, striking down the Moabites.
25
They destroyed the cities and covered every good field with stones, for each man threw stones on it. They stopped up all the springs and felled all the good trees, until only Kir-Hareseth was left; but even this city was attacked by the slingers from every side.
26
When the king of Moab saw that the battle was too strong for him, he took with him seven hundred men who drew the sword, to break through toward the king of Edom, but he could not.
27
Then he took his firstborn son, who was to reign after him, and offered him as a burnt offering on the wall. And great wrath came upon Israel, so they withdrew from him and returned to their own land.

2 Kings 3 records the coalition of three kings—Israel, Judah, and Edom—who joined together to fight against the rebellion of the king of Moab. On the difficult march, they ran out of water and sought help from the prophet Elisha. Elisha was unwilling to help because of the presence of the wicked king of Israel, but for Jehoshaphat’s sake, the Lord performed a miracle of water without rain and granted victory. Yet the battle ended tragically when the king of Moab offered his son as a sacrifice, causing Israel to withdraw.

- The valley will be filled with water without rain
- The LORD will deliver Moab into their hands
