These are the last words of David: The utterance of David son of Jesse, and the utterance of the man who was raised on high, the anointed of the God of Jacob, the sweet psalmist of Israel:

The Spirit of the LORD spoke by me, and his word was on my tongue;
3
The God of Israel said, the Rock of Israel spoke to me: When one rules over men justly, ruling in the fear of God,
4
he shines like the light of morning, like a morning without clouds, when, after rain, tender grass springs forth from the earth.
5
Is not my house so with God? For he has made with me an everlasting covenant, ordered in all things and secure. For will he not cause all my salvation and all my desire to grow?
6
But the worthless are all like thorns thrown away; for they cannot be taken up by hand:
7
no one can touch them, but with an iron tool or the shaft of a spear; and they are utterly burned with fire!

These are the names of the mighty men who were with David: Ishbaal the Hachmonite, chief of the three; he wielded his spear against eight hundred men, whom he killed at one time.
9
And after him was Eleazar the son of Dodo, the son of an Ahohite; he was one of the three mighty men. He was with David when they defied the Philistines who had gathered there for battle, while the men of Israel had withdrawn.

But he arose and struck down the Philistines until his hand grew weary and clung to the sword. The LORD gave a great victory that day. The people returned after him only to plunder.

And after him was Shammah the son of Agee, the Hararite. When the Philistines gathered at Lehi — there was a plot of ground there full of lentils — and the army fled from before the Philistines,

he took his stand in the midst of the field, defended it, and struck down the Philistines. And the LORD gave a great victory.
13
Once three of the thirty chiefs went down to David at harvest time, near the cave of Adullam, while a band of Philistines was encamped in the Valley of Rephaim.
14
At that time David was in the stronghold, and the Philistine garrison was then at Bethlehem.
15
And David longed, and said, “Oh, that someone would give me water to drink from the well of Bethlehem that is by the gate!”
16
Then the three mighty men broke through the camp of the Philistines, drew water from the well of Bethlehem that is by the gate, carried it, and brought it to David. But David would not drink it, but poured it out as a drink offering to the LORD,
17
he said, “Far be it from me, O LORD, to do this! Is this not the blood of the men who went at the risk of their lives?” And he would not drink it. These things did the three mighty men.
18
Abishai, the brother of Joab, the son of Zeruiah, was chief of the thirty. And he wielded his spear against three hundred men and killed them; and he won a name among the thirty.
19
Was he not the most honored of the thirty? Indeed, he became their leader, but he could not equal the three.
20
And next was Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, the son of a valiant man, great in deeds, from Kabzeel; he struck down the two mighty men of Moab. He also went down into a pit and killed a lion on a day when snow had fallen.
21
And he killed an Egyptian, a man of great stature; in the Egyptian’s hand was a spear, but he went down to him with a staff, snatched the spear from the Egyptian’s hand, and killed him with his own spear.
22
These things did Benaiah the son of Jehoiada; and he won a name among the thirty mighty men.
23
He was the most honored of the thirty, but he could not equal the three. And David set him over his guard.

Asahel the brother of Joab was among the thirty; Elhanan the son of Dodo of Bethlehem;

Shammah the Harodite; Elika the Harodite;

Helez the Paltite; Ira the son of Ikkesh the Tekoite;
27
Abiezer the Anathothite; Mebunnai the Hushathite;
28
Zalmon the Ahohite; Maharai the Netophathite;

Heleb the son of Baanah the Netophathite; Ittai the son of Ribai of Gibeah of Benjamin;
30
Benaiah the Pirathonite; Hiddai from the brooks of Gaash;

Abialbon the Arbathite; Azmaveth the Baharumite;

Eliahba the Shaalbonite; the sons of Jashen; Jonathan

son of Shammah the Hararite; Ahiam the son of Sharar the Hararite;

Eliphelet the son of Ahasbai the Maacathite; Eliam the son of Ahithophel the Gilonite;

Hezro the Carmelite; Paarai the Arbite;

Igal the son of Nathan of Zobah; Bani the Gadite;

Zelek the Ammonite; Naharai the Beerothite, armor-bearer of Joab the son of Zeruiah;

Ira the Ithrite; Gareb the Ithrite;

Uriah the Hittite: all of them thirty-seven.
➡️ He declares that the LORD spoke through him, and describes a just ruler like the light of dawn
➡️ The LORD made an everlasting covenant with him — the ground of his confidence
➡️ But the wicked will be like thorns burned up completely

📌 2. David’s Three Chief Heroes (verses 8–12)
a. Josheb-Basshebeth (Adino the Eznite)
➡️ Defeated 800 men in one battle
b. Eleazar son of Dodo
➡️ Held his ground when the men of Israel retreated and his hand clung to the sword because he did not cease fighting
c. Shammah son of Agee
➡️ Stood alone guarding a field of lentils from the Philistines
🎯 Courage in faithfulness is the mark of a true hero.
📌 3. The Three Heroes Who Sought Water for David (verses 13–17)
➡️ When David said he longed to drink water from the well at Bethlehem, the three heroes broke through the Philistine camp
➡️ They brought the water, but David poured it out as an offering because he would not drink their “blood”
🎯 Extraordinary loyalty is honored, and sincere devotion is offered to the LORD.
📌 4. Two Other Special Heroes (verses 18–23)
a. Abishai
➡️ Killed 300 men with his spear
➡️ Was appointed leader of the three heroes, but was not equal to them
b. Benaiah son of Jehoiada
➡️ Killed two Moabite champions
➡️ Killed a lion in a pit when snow was falling
➡️ Killed a giant Egyptian with his own weapon
➡️ Became the king’s chief guard
